guys, I was wondering when you pair up your breeders, do you match birds that compliment each other in the air or on the ground. Lets say these birds are bred tight with linebreeding for years.
The resaon I ask is because they have different styles of spinning, deph, and speed. When I say in the air, I meant two birds that spin similar in style, depth, and speed but they might not have similar build.
And when I say, on the ground, I meant that these birds have similar body structure or type, but different build, some have good meat and muscle and some have less. One last varible is they are all good spinners in their own way and no one is really all better than another.
thanks in advance thong

Hey Thong, if birds have been bred tight and they have a gene-pool with the goods, don't worry about it too much. Here is a brief summary of steps to follow when breeding rollers...
1: Mix and match until you find pairs that click. 2: Breed as many offspring from them as you can. 3: Select the best of these offspring 4: Mix and match thier offspring to find more click pairs. 5: Repeat 1-2-3-4 until you have a number of click pairs 6: AND have 2 or 3 kits of fine spinners from them.
These are the bones, flesh it out with meat as our old friend Jim would say. ---------- FLY ON! Tony Chavarria

Thong,
A very difficult question to answer. There are the tangable stuff like performance and form (type), but there is another ingrediant that I can't really describe and that is character. I know what I am looking for, but I really can't describe it in terms that can be understood well enough to be used as a guide or tool. I even don't totally understand what I am seeing in a bird that I precieve has that "character" value. And, what makes it even more difficult to explain is that I am not always right on my first decision(s).
I like putting birds together that have similar performance traits with little concern about what they look like on the perch............but, the decision trigger still rests on that "character" button. Some of my best performers I do not breed because they lack the character I am looking for.
Keep in mind I feel I have the right to mismanage my loft all I want to(LOL). Also keep in mind I don't believe everything I say, think, or do(LOL).
I hope you understand what I am saying; if you do please tell me so I too can understand what I am saying.

Tony, thanks for the advice. Nick, good point. I think character is in the eye of the beholder. I do understand your point. I thinik no two people will see the same character. And I think that character alone will not get you best spinners, nor is color, size, looks, pedigree, band #, eye color, type and etc. But proper spin alone and selective breeding for that. so don't put down your ugly birds that is above the rest in the air. I too felt that way and have over look the same thing, ugly birds only take care of business in the air, not on the ground, but we have to tell ourselves what is more important? On the ground/pen or in the air.
I just wish my birds have the same meat quality or build, but I quess that is something I can work on in the future.
