I have been reading quit a bit some where else, I call it the blind leading the blind place on the false impression that guys that fly in competion are flying and breeding short working birds , some even call them competion rollers. Folks there is no such thing as a "competion" roller, the thing is with first class competion kit is that a lot has to be asked the birds within it , number one above all else is THE BIRDS HAVE TO DO IT RIGHT from start to finish , plus they have to have the stability to kit. Each and everyone of us wants depth , but that bird MUST do it correctly from start to finish or it is NOTHING but a cull. By doing it right I mean qaulity from start to finish , the bird must be capable of spinning straight and smooth with no deviation, glitching ect. what so ever and must exit the roll cleanly and do this with at least enough velosity to not be able to count the revolutions of the roll. More time's than I can count I have stood under kits where inexperianced and fanciers with no concept of what a good bird is ohhing and awing over some deep cull that can't roll properly and flawlesly. Depth comes in different ways, one is controled by a stable bird and the other is the extream depth of a bird with no control or lact of stability, the birds that are rolling with no stabilty try to control it and get glitchy to down right sloppy is trying to come out of it or fighting the roll, most of these end up dead. A good bird can hold it (the roll) and maintain qaulity and pop out at will, a good bird with depth will also shorten it way up when low and will not be a chronic bumper (any bird can make a mistake though) he best won't though. If a deep bird doesn't kit it is because of instability , these birds will either get a handle on it or they hit a point where they want to land early and are afraid to fly or they just kill themselfs. The goal is to allways breed towards deep stable birds that can roll flawlessly , the deeper the bird the more you are asking of it so a "good" deep bird with stability is something to be treasured, as for just depth, any idiot can breed unstable birds that are deep, but garbage is garbage. Bottom line is a bird MUST roll properly and flawlessly to begin with and have the stability to kit or it is nothing more than a cull

The same goes for frequency Nick , if the qaulity isn't there it means nothing , qaulity is the same standard world wide "fluid" with no gliching and clean going into the roll ,throughout the roll, and a clean finish.

Great post.It just goes to show how difficult a job this is.The bird that possesses quality, depth, velocity, frequency, control and the Character to keep kitting is definetly a Treasure.Imagine dropping 30' or better in great form and style with frequency and then busts ass to get back to the kit. That's character.

Very TRUE!!!!! Its very very funny to me that some keep saying that when the best quality, fastest, and deepest birds are found in the back yards of guys that compete. Kevin P.S. I guess its easier to tell you that their poke-a-dot greenish blue dilute grizzle spread is a true spinner than to show you. Plus it would hurt sells if they competed.

Todd, I was hoping to meet you when I was on Oahu a couple weeks back but I know how it is when you're busy! Maybe Next time. I did get a chance to spend the day with Walt, Tom, and Clayton and had a great time looking over the birds and talking roller B.S. with some great guys! Man, I don't know how you guys fly in that wind? I was surprised that Walt's kit held it together and stayed within range the whole time considering it was blowing at least 20mph or better.
Scott, those birds that you sent Clayton are NICE! As soon as Clayton gets a few rounds from them in the air, the other flyers in Hawaii better watch out!

Scott, Nice shot man. I have 4-5 out of 40 that are "real" birds. Some of them hit a good one some of the time but the core group is on every time they roll. Once you see a "real" bird hit a 30 you won`t forget it. Just like the first time your birds hit a 15 bird break with gusto. The jaw drops and the top of your head hinges open from the grin on your face. nice post
---------- If they don`t kit,they don`t score. Color don`t roll and peds don`t fly. It`s a comp thing,understand?
