----------I have located some birds on the internet that really interest me,how do you know if who you are dealing with is reputable. Is their any questions you could ask to establish a reasonable level of comfort with dealing with someone you don't know. The birds in question are over 600 miles away. the price is fair the pictures of the stock look good.Any references he might give I would probably not know.Short of your gut feeling is this even a good idea? The birds in question simply are not available any where close to me. Your suggestions/comments are appreciated.

Buy from someone you know or that has been refered to you by a roller person. You will get the background of the birds and years of experience bred into them. Chances are the biggest expense will be shipping and a nest box. I have found that most breeders want to know something about you before they will sell you some of their lifes work so be prepared for some questions. You will be able to get some quality youngs birds at a good price, fly them to see what they will do and go from there.

The best two people that I could recomend to you where you will buy from them without seeing the birds in the air are Tony (the owner of this site) and Danny Horner from NC. You will get darn good birds for a reasonable price.

Hey Ron, my sense is you want a guarantee that all will work out fine. To me, it’s all about the trust established before you buy and the willingness of the seller to help after the sale.
I propose you speak to me about purchasing my stock. I will level with you and tell you what I know my stock will do for you and what reasonable expectations you can have.
I have been on the Internet with my site for 5 years. I have sold birds for the last 2 or 3 years out of my line which I have been breeding since 1993. Call me at 1-800-498-2043 and we can discuss your needs and concerns. I am waiting for your call. ---------- FLY ON! Tony Chavarria

Ron I agree with these guys. Do not buy the birds because they look good in a picture. You want somebody who will stand behind their birds. Either find someone in your area or talk to Tony. I know tons of guys who have been taken by scam artists. Feather merchants are everywhere. I was at a local farm sale and a buddy of mine introduced to this guy selling birds. The asked me what kinds of birds I raised then wanted desperately to come to my loft to see them I know by reputation that this guy is a theif so I refused. When I got home I made sure my dog was placed in my loft it was locked and my retired neighbor asked to keep an eye out. There is always someone waiting to steakl from you or take your hard earned money. Always air on the side of caution. C.J.

First let me thank everyone for there comments. You all have just confirmed my own feelings. The birds in question are Fireballs(needle in a haystack)I am not a novice to rollers, flew smith/palona,stephens,fireballs and some hatcher birds from 1980 thru 1993.Currently have some young birm's that are showing some promise(need more patience)I would like to get some fireballs to play with on the side just nostalgia I guess.I would like to ask you guys how do you score top shelf birds with no contacts,no local flyers,I can't spend every weekend chasing all over the country trying to make some contacts/friends in the sport.I hate to say it but it is little bit of an OLD BOYS club and I'm trying to peek into the window.lol Seems everyone here know each other which I think is great but nobody knows me from adam,I wouldn't volunteer birds to some I didn't know either.GOT TO GET OUT OF THE BACKYARD! ---------- Ron

Your best investment initially is to pick 2 or3 solid pairs FROM THE AIR!!!!!!!...Go to the NBRC and look for the most reputable breeder in your area and make the drive.Obtain breeders that are a year and a half and up.These are birds that not only roll, but kit,the velocity must be very fast and drop down in a straight H ,and shoot back to the kit.The time invested initially in solid spinning stock with heart is a drop in the bucket compared to tens and yes ,hundreds of maybesLet your eyes be your guide.Another thing to consider if your breeder of choice is not ready,BUILD,BUILD,BUILD,your kit boxes and breeder set-up you want your new breeders to be safe and comfortable and new youngsters to be properly weaned and trained.Theres nothing worse than good stock going to waste from poor planing and impatience. This is a very basic plan to keep your enjoyment of the roller hobby on a steady incline, any short cuts WILL come back to bite you in the ass, with a backyard full of pets.Go with your gut on the internet thing. This is just my opinion,Hope this helps.Aloha,Todd

Ron, I agree with Todd. Don't be in too much of a hurry. Join the NBRC, build your kit boxes, visit some roller men and see their birds fly, read some roller books and NBRC journals, and spend some time on these sites so you can ask good questions. Attend some competition flys in your region (the NBRC Fall Fly is coming up). Look at whose birds are performing the way you want them to. Then visit their lofts a few times to see their birds fly. Ask questions that show you are interested and serious. You'll get good quality birds once you have demonstrated that you are seriously interested in the hobby. Most established breeders are justifiably gun shy about donating good birds to someone new in the sport with only a casual interest.... Most have lost good birds that way. What area of the country are you in? Maybe we can give you some pointers. (Of course you already have a great lead with Tony.) Good luck! YITS, Cliff

Thanks for the advice,I'm in northeast Ohio, was a backyard flyer for about 15 years and I have just gotten back into rollers this spring.I do have some birds now but would like to try at least another family for comparison.Just haven't been able to find any local flyers.I already have a breeder loft and another loft with two flyouts with plans for at least one more.I already plan to join the NBRC just a matter of sending my dues.Attending some flys would be great idea.Would really like to get enough birds together to compete just have a kit 4 month old squeekers right now. ---------- Ron

Ron, are you from Youngstown/Warren? I was there last weekend for my daughter's State softball playoff. I could've got together with you for an hour or so since the game was cancelled on Saturday due to the rain.

Ron, Man you are in the middle of the birth place of rollers in the US with the first German imports! Sounds like you are not far from Salineville, were my second wife was from. I was born and raised in Canton, and was a backyard flyer there for years as a teen and young adult. Then my brother did the same thing. There are great roller guys in Ohio, from John Bender, Brian Middaugh, to old timers like Wally Fort, Russ Harter, Baker, Howard Beal (in North Canton), just to name a few. Check out the Akron-Canton Roller Club. They have a big fly every year and I'm sure that they would welcome your visit, and could put you in touch. Let me know if you need any information to contact them. It's all there in the NBRC bulletins. YITS, Cliff

Cliff How you doing,Salineville is only 30 minutes or so from me,I do some hunting down that way.My next move is to send my memebership to NBRC and try and get in touch with the guys in Akron/Canton.I had some birds from Russ Harter back in the 80's,watch them fly a couple of times. If I remember right they had a club fly every month during the summer.Just getting my feet wet again and looking to make some contacts and hopefully friends in the sport.I have been "out" of rollers for about ten years,job.family.etc. but this time I'm back for good.

Ron, I had a brother that use to have a mink farm in Carrollton in the same part of the state. You're in a fairly isolated part of the state, but it sounds like you're doing it right. There is another group of guys in Portsmouth, but that may be a long way off for you. There is much you can learn from these roller sites. If there is anything I can do, or if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask. Remember, there are no dumb questions. YITS, Cliff
