It was great, of course, Spud. Saw some familiar faces and met some great new roller guys as well. It's always good to get to meet the guys that you spar with on these lists from time to time! Believe it or not, Ken Billings, Scott Campbell and I sat together at the banquet and had a great time! LOL! The auctioneer (John McKiernan)was a hoot and kept us all in stitches, never missing the opportunity to take a jab at Kenny, who had pulled his chair out from under 'neath of him earlier. Take my word for it....people are not what you read on these lists. (Sorry I didn't get to meet you BMC. I thought maybe you'd make it since it was roughly in your neck of the woods.) And I am sorry that I didn't get to meet you all! We saw some decent kits....in their defense it was over a hundred degrees! Pete Kaufman's kit was really sweet with the best speed, depth and work rate of those we saw. I can see why he won his region with over 400 points. I cannot see how that kit could possibly score only 5 pts. in the finals, though! Meeting and talking with Bruce Cooper was one of the highlights for me. Hearing what men have to say who talked with and flew birds with Pensom is a rare treat. I also enjoyed getting to talk with and hear the things that Frank Lavin, Norm Reed and Joe Houghton had to say; three more icons in the sport. Eldon Cheney was inducted into the Hall of Fame and Beaver Dayton received his Master Flyer award. The panel discussion with Joe Houghton, Bruce Cooper, Tom Monson and Rick Schoening was thought-provoking and interesting. Ivan Hanchett, Mitch Reed, Pete Kaufman, and the rest of the northwest flyers are to be congratulated for a great success in spite of the heat. We have our job cut out for us in Carolina next year!

Our wives made us promise to be nice , we kicked , we screamed , Kenny even threw himself on the floor, but in the end we promised to be nice so that they would be nice to us.

Wow, sounds like a great time! I wish I could have been there. Cliff, I think your point is well made, we need to meet people in person before we really know where they are coming from. Good lesson for me to remember.

Well then, my hat's off to your ladies, Scott! And here I was giving all the credit to you guys! Yeah, Spud, it is good to remember that there is much more to the guys on these lists and their personalities than what what we see in these forums. And I'd say that is true accross the board, regardless of the site or the individual doing the posting. It is far to easy to judge folk and "pigeon-hole" them with the notion that we really know them from the way they post. As always, it merely represents one aspect of the person's true self.

The convention was a lot of fun in spite of the uncharacteristically hot weather. Meeting the people that we talk to on these lists was the highlight of the weekend.
Mitch Reed put up a promising looking young bird kit. He had not been working his old bird team much because he was working with the young birds. He had added a couple of deep birds to the kit to put on a show. (they did) The kit didn't get together and work as a team. Pete's team came out and looked good. Pete didn't get a chance to watch the birds as he has several guys in the loft working him over for birds LOL. Ivan put his birds out for us in 100+ deg temp. That is 20 hotter than the norm for our area. It is unfortunate that the group did not get to see what his birds are capable of.
I picked up 13 birds at the auction Sat. night from Pete and Mitch. I was glad the auction was before people saw the birds fly or I would have had to spend a lot more.

I enjoyed meeting you, Keith. Good luck with those squeakers. It looks like you got some potential good ones, after talking with Mitch! Hope to see you next year.

Hey Cliff,
It was great meeting you in person.. Me and the wife are starting a colored Carolina's slush fund right now.. We really want to make your convention and get a chance to meet you guys on your home turf.. No hangin's though!!! I'm working a special pair of glasses that make purple pink checks look like red check badges!! Just so Scott don't put his foot in his mouth!! LOL
Do you think Clay Hoyle would mind if I moved his chair for him?? LOL See ya next year.. Mongrel Lofts

The convention was great. Ivan and the group up there put on an excellent tour Friday at several lofts and a visit to Mt St Helens. Then to top it off a fantastic BBQ that evening topped off with Ivan flying one of his kits. As a rookie it was nice to meet with some of the top guys in this sport and see some great birds. Had an excellent ride up the coast and back down to home in Newcastle, Calif. Look forward to the next. Steve Bills

Kenny,
The pleasure was all mine. I'm glad to hear about your slush fund. You will enjoy meeting Clay....he's a salt of the earth kinda guy. You'll be safe here,in Greensboro, but I can't promise no hangin's though once we get to Clay's turf....you know how those mountain hillbillies are!!! They have their own legal system! LOL! You best mind your manners up there! Hey, you might be onto something with those glasses...they might level the playing field a little more! Fact is, when you see these birds ballin'it up together, with speed, for 30-40 ft. you won't care what color they are! We're kickin' around some interesting ideas in addition to flying the kits; like maybe a Futurity Kit of birds from all the top Carolina Flyers that we can judge for best type at a lawn show, and then fly out to be judged for best performer. Maybe we'll let guys handle them and buy tickets for the birds they think will win and then have a drawing for the birds that win, etc. I can promise you good friends, good birds...and a helluva good time. That's what the convention is all about, right?
YITS, Cliff
