I have a 3 year old hen which is an occasional bumper. she hit the roof on Sunday and hurt her wing. I have her in a nest box now for some R&R. She can hold her wing to her body but seems unable to fly. There are no obvious signs of injury.
Whats the chances of her recovering. She was a good bird that bred some good youngsters and I would be keen to keep her.
All advice appreciated.

Allie, If there is no sign of obvious displacement, I'd just leave her be if you want her mostly for breeding. She'll recover and be fine for you. One of Clay Hoyle's best breeding hens he calls "the broke-wing hen". Her wing was broken by a hawk, I think, and she never flew again, but she has bred many winning birds for him! I've got a cock I call same thing for the same reason. They don't fly, but they can still be good producers. YITS, Cliff

Hi Hector.
The bird was one of a pair I got when I first started with rollers about 3 years ago. I dont know what strain or any history atall. She has bred some reasonable birds compared to the various other pairs I picked up through time. However, I now have a loft full of Dave Moseley youngsters, the majority directly from Dave. I am concentrating on them now and just flying my older birds for fun. As I said though, she was one of the first birds I aquired and is a reasonable flyer and breeder so I would like to enjoy her for a little longer.

hey i got a question c what u guys think..
last week i went to the flea market n this guy was sell'n some roller i looked at them he said they were from his stock of birds tat he's been work'n with the parents n they roll good so the youngs should roll too ...i looked at this white kind of grizzle look'n n i c tat the wing were broken n i asked him what happen to the wings n he said he dont know n i asked him i thought these came out of ur stock...well he dropped the subject n asked if am i buying it or not...i refuse to buy the bird, the question for u guys is what must've happen to this birds wing for sure its not from his stock or even his birds cuz he didnt know what happen to the wings...so what would the audience think might've happen to the wings...
-the bird must've rolldown n broke the wing while roll'n -got a predator attack -cruel owner broke it -others

Ally, once you have accumelated allot of good rollers, those ones with broken wing, leg or peak and/or bumbers and rolldown will become culls and culled right away. If the bird was excellent in the air and perch but suffered a broken wing then he/she bought a ticket to the breeding pen but if it is a cock bird and lost a leg, then he is culled. No if or buts about it. Good luck with your bird.
