I seem to be getting on top of them but i read that they can live for 36 weeks without food around the loft,Also red mite and northern mite look the same to me so i cant be 100 per cent sure they are red mite.any 1 know of a quick remedy.

There is some stuff that you can buy from Foy's or Jed's that is used to get rid of the mites in the loft. It comes in bottle and red in color. Forgot the name but is made for red mites. What I do is put the stuff in a spray bottle so that it goes along way and sprays all the cracks and the edges of the inside of the loft. Also I use Demetrious Earth or Seven Dust and spread it in the cracks, on floor and perches. After a few days, things are back to normal without those pests. Once you get rid of them from the loft, you won’t have them on the birds but if you treat your birds and the mites still in the loft, then in a few days they will be back on the birds again.

If you are breeding in an open loft, and have boxes for the breeders, then spread seven dust on the bottom of the nest box and under the nest bowl. That stuff doesn’t hurt the birds but sure will keep the critters away. And/or mix the seven dust with the nesting materials in the nest bowl. Hope this will help and give you some ideas.

Hey Jay,
Where do you buy that Demetrious dirt or Seven dust?Don't have mites but would like to get some to use as a preventative measure.
