I think my pigeons are trying to teach me something. I am just a slow learner. I am not sure what they are teaching me.
I put plastic grocery bags on a bamboo pole. I used it to scare them off the Highline. They started landing in a Pine tree. I threw tennis ball thru the Pine with a slang shot. That scared them out until they got tired then they just ignored the balls.
I started to get a shotgun. But I repented.
They tend to want to fly about thirty feet high and cirlce trees. If I try to whistle them down they go up maybe two hundred feet and fly about ten minutes then start back in. If I go to the kit box and whistle they go back up.
Once they set in the tree for ten minutes yesterday they came down to the box. Once they were on the kit box I whistled and they left the kit box and came maybe twenty yards over to me where I was washing a horse. Then went back to the box. I whistle again and they went to the chair I set and watch them fly sometimes.
Is it normal for them to treat my whistle with two different actions depending on wheater they are up high or down low.
One almost flip a couple times yesterday. They are eight weeks old.
I only let them eat two and one half minutes yesterday. I had been leting them eat all they want. I started just flying them in the afternoon. If I feed them all they want in the afternoon they want trap in after flying the next morning.

That is becuase they were still hungry to the point where they want more. When whistling and being in a distance away from them, they think you were going to feed them and they come to you. 2 1/2 min of feed time seams too low but how many birds in the kit are we talking about?
A suggestion for you to get your birds to come down to the kit box roof is get yourself a couple of fantail pigeons and when your birds at the end of their flight time, put the fantails on the kit box roof. That way, your rollers will make an effort on landing on top the kit box. It is just a thought...

Huey, Just my thinking, but I never whistle my birds off the top of the kitbox unless it is to come to the inside of the kitbox itself to eat. You mentioned that you whistled them off kitbox where they came to you while washing a horse. All though it is good that they came to the whistle, I want them to know that it is time to come inside kitbox when using a whistle. Just my opinion. Bobby ---------- Proof Is In The Air!!!!!!!

There was 10 of them.
Two were old ,two year, birds I was given. One rolls two are three times in twenty minutes and at an angle the second rolls straight down really pretty but only once maybe in twenty mintes.
I used These older birds to help get the young birds up and flying. I think I need to remove them. If I put them in a wire cage on the kit box would the results be the same as with Fantails?

Huey, I think the birds are not in your control. They may be controlling you. If they continue to do all these things you may end up CULL them. Try to handle them. Here is what they should do when you open the kit box door
Fly Land (either kit box roof or house roof or tree/pole) Get in to kit box within couple of minutes
if they are not doing above they either getting overfed or underfed
Q) What you feed? Q) How much you feeding? Q) How many times you fly your birds / day and when Q) How many birds your flying Q) Temp?

Q) What you feed? Milo, wheat, pigeon feed, 20% laying pellets mixed. Was feeding half in the morning and half in the afternoon. Started feeding all you can eat in the evening. Yesterday they trapped in and got one table spoon, I put them back out, they sit in a tree till dark, slept on top of the kit box. Trapped in this morning and got one table spoon. They will be hungry this afternoon.
Q) How much you feeding? Was 6 table spoons twice a day, then all you can eat once a day, moving towards eating the amount it takes to fly 20/30 minutes.
Q) How many times you fly your birds / day and when Was flying morning and evening, they want trap in the morning when I feed the complete ration in the evening so I went to just flying in the evening. Wondered about flying them twice in the evening.
Q) How many birds your flying Eight, Have nine more that are moving to the kit box this week
Q) Temp? Hot, probably 85/90 in the afternoon. 75/80 in the mornings.

Huey, Once you feed them all they can eat, they are done for 24 hours. You`re doing it backwards. When you let em out they need to be empty. This will promote quicker trapping and easier handling. If you fly them twice a day give em enough to trap in the morning then a full ration in the evening, not all they can eat. You have ten birds with a couple of younger birds.Feed em a cup and a quarter for a full ration and a 1/4 cup to trap in the morning. If they still don`t respond or do so slowly cut em a 1/4 cup on the ration. This should straighten them out pretty quickly. If they still land in the tree box em up and release them across the street from your house. g/l
ps drop the pellets if you are feeding the pigeon mix. Too much goodies in the groceries.

Huey......Sounds like your birds are too full of feed. What I do is to fly them in the morning. When they come down I whistle them in and shake a feed can at the same time. I give them about 2 to 3 tbl. spoons of feed at that time. I fly 10 birds. Then in the early evening when I fly them again I repeat the process of getting them in the kit box,but this time I give them a full ration of feed.Which is roughly 1 tbl. of feed per bird. I feed 1/3 wheat, 1/3 milo and 1/3 pigeon mix. I use a good quality pigeon feed at least 11% protine. And first and formost YOU must be patient. The rest will fall into place. I think you are giving very rich and too much feed.
You may want to consider spending few dollars and get a standard US measuring cup from grocery store (wal-mart, k-mart or shop-rite). There should be marking on it (one side should say like 1/2, 3/4, 1 cup and other side should say 1, 2, 3, ounce).
1 Cup (8 ounce) to 10 birds/day. When temp. get above 85 cut the feed and give 6 ounces to 10 birds per day.
Since you fly twice a day, giving half ration after each fly may not work well. You need to find out how long birds take to digest...so it is not just the amount but how long will take to digest. I fly once a day in the evening and after evening fly they get full ration and that's it I do not have to worry about digestion just the how much I should feed.
Small seeds like milo, millet or even pellet works well if you would like to fly often since these small grains digest very quickly (convert into energy)...Do not give wheat or peas. These grains take lot longer to digest.
Some time if birds in the kit are not of same age then there will be also an issue. I have seen birds of same age fly good together.

Hi Velo99, I end up buying this feeder. The thing is the picture above would not represent the product. I though I have to cut the welded stand to make birds eat comfortable and also the top part look a lot thinner and I was expecting the birds would still perched.
This is one of the nicest and heavy feeder I ever bought. Nothing was welded even the top part was separated and the top part is lot heavier then what you see in above picture. I will take picture and post here. This is the first feeder I own which is true to say birds can not perch on it. The heavy rod roll very good and birds can not perch. I have other feeders suppose to be anti perch but birds do perch very easily. This feeder is worth buying. I am unable to locate USB port for digital camera at the moment. Will post pics.
