Hello everyone! I raised rollers as a kid back in the 70's and early 80's. Just thought they were cool pets, didn't know you could train them. Got some so-so rollers about a year ago. Been reading this forum for about a month now. Just built my first kit box and started some young birds. It's so cool, You guys have got me hooked so bad. I can't sleep anymore, I just want to train my birds. I'm trying to save some money for some real birds. You guys just keep writing and I will keep reading everyday. Thanks for all the info. Val

I am very motivated, especially about getting better birds, LOL! I got 5 pair of masons about the time I discovered this forum. From listening to you all, it doesn't sound like I'm gonna like them either. They don't come in to the roll untill very late. Spent a lot of money on them. My wife is pretty upset when I told her I need some different birds already. Told her I might need a different wife to,LOL. I figure this fall if I can find some bettter birds I will try my luck again. I live in Oklahoma and its been over 100 degrees every day, can't ship in or out, so I will just play with what I got and keep reading the forum.

Don't give up on the Masons too quick. There are a lot of people who swear by them. You need to find some breeders who fly them and see what they are doing with them. The guy who sold them to you was proud of 'em so he could put you in contact with others who believe in them as well.

I won't give up on them, but the guy I got them from claimed he has been in it for 27 years and flew the world cup several times years ago and placed in the top 5 a few times, so I immediatly sent him some a money order for 5 pair. A couple of days later he mentioned that he got these particuler birds last year during hawk season and has never flown them! So I don't know what I got, but theres not alot of confidence there. I feel like I just got some culls, so I'm looking at a year probably before the young birds will start showing what they got.I only want to deal with club members from now on, hopefully I can find some willing! I would appreciate if any mason people read this, they would contact me. Thanks!

Val if you only buy birds by word of mouth it doesn't matter who you purchase them from you are going to meet with disappointment. Only buy birds out of the air.
If a guy is confident enough about his birds he will back them up. If not you are better to just walk away.

Hi Val you sound like me. I'm having too much fun!! Even if you don't like the masons keep them all for fosters. When you get the birds you want you can raise alot more with the fosters. I'd fly the crap out of them Masons and see what ya Got! Nice to have you on here.

when I got hooked up on the br, I caught a few squabs and started flying them for a month or 2, but they all turned out to be rolldowns. I suggest that if you get birds, don't get young ones, try to get a bird that has been flying for almost 1-2 years, those will have a stronger chance of not being rolldowns/culls in the future.

I am new to the hobby and I hear all these different names everyone calls these birds for example (masons). I was wondering how you determine what you have. I have birmingham rollers, are these other names you call the birminghams or is that another breed all together or what? I hear that the masons take longer to come into the roll so I was curious as to what I have, if I can find that out.

These are names of breeders that have develope thier own strain or family of Birmingham Rollers. Each family will have thier own little characteristics or personalities(character). In this case they are talking about George Mason and his family of Birmingham Rollers. He is a top notch breeder so consequently many in the hobby desire to have his family's bloodline in thier loft. There are other names you will often hear as well.
