Anybody know how to sex pigeons, short of seeing them laying an egg? I have 3. I know for sure the sexes of two of them but not sure about the 3rd. Can you tell from the feathers on the wings? One row of feathers on the females wings lay different than the male. Any Ideas out there? Thanx..

RavenWilde, Depending on the family of birds you have, you can USUALLY tell by the size, general build of the bird and overall character. I have had young birds that took a while to decide what they were, usually hens acting like cocks. Of course if you put 2 birds together and get 4 eggs you either have 2 hens together or not enough nest boxes and 2 different pairs trying to use the same nest bowl. If the original breeder is nearby have him take a look and tell you what is what.

Look for ticking, dark spots like ink,in the feathers. These will be the cock bird 99.9% of the time. ---------- If they don`t kit, they don`t score. Color don`t roll and peds don`t fly. It`s a comp thing, understand?

The only sure way is from sex linked matings. You can tell both sexes this way.It takes some time to learn what matings will work and I seldom have time to do it.LOL.David
