---------- HI list. Well, I worked all year for this day, Sept. 8 at 1:00 p.m. I let my 11 bird team out and Mel Stalzer was the judge. Troy Copeland was the RD. Dan Kraker, Butch Guericke, Frank Kazor, my dad Earl Tappenden, my wife Lorri, and daughter Tricia and her Grandpa Max were all watching as I called "time in". My dad was running a video camera set up on a tripod all ready for the show. They come out doing pretty good. They performed for six minutes and 29 seconds and then I DQ'd. The other nine stayed up for approx. 30 minutes and put on a pretty good show. Had a raw score of 42! I will be back in the spring with 20 birds for the W/C fly!! It was an honor to have Mel judge my first kit and Troy Compland as the RD. Thanks to Dan for coming to watch. It was a pleasure to meet him. Butch Guericke is where I got my first birds and I was flying a hen with the Clyde Davis bloodline. Four young ones in the kit were half Davis/Henderson, five Hendersons and one three year old Mee/Henderson that Keith Hugley gave me. Nice hen! Thank you very much Keith for all the help you've given me and the birds. I'd like to take the time to thank my friends that has really helped me in the sport...Scott Campbell, Morris DeRyke who has given me some Mee birds, and Wendell Spisak who gave me some Mee birds, who unfortuneately could not put his birds up this fall after all his hard work. The weather turned bad up there. And again, a special thanks to Butch Guericke for being a friend and gettmg me started. And to Tony and this site for all the information I've learned from everyone on this site. I am so fortuneate to have such good friends in the sport and I thank God every day for it. It's been a joy to have met some of you and communicated through this list with others of you. I guess I've rattled on long enough but that day was such a rush. I love this sport!!! Plan on getting better every year. Again, thank you all. I'll try to get a picture of the group at my fly on here soon. Tapp

Nice work, Kim. There's nothing like the comraderie we share at the local, regional and national events in this hobby. I look forward to every one that we have. And if the birds are performing, that's even better!! LOL!Any idea what caused the DQ? YITS, Cliff

Cliff what I beleive happend is I had 90 acres of 11 ft corn field they flew over daily. the day I flew they came in the night and started chopping the corn. by 12;00 noon they were done. I realesed for the fly at 12;30pm when they came out they flew lower than normal and over my pasture and barn were they never fly. I think the terriain looked foreign to them. just my personal opinion. And I knew my birds as I fly allmost every day. Thanks CJ,Cliff David ---------- Tapp

There is always a next time Tapp. It is very good on your first try and best of luck on your next fly.
It appears that you were DQed because two or more birds came down early which caused the scoring to stop. Were they very hungry when you flew them? The reason I am asking this question is because when my birds are very hungry they fly very low and not for long and few will come dowin very early. When they are very conditioned they will fly high and long. But when they are conditioned just right and not very hungry, they will fly the right hight and the right duration with excellent performance.
Please and if you don't mind, tell us how did you prep them for the fly! Maybe we can add a suggestion or two to help you prepare for your next. Good job and best of luck.
Jay

Jay they were not flown for 2 days and were on full feed. little over a cup of peas and milo. !/3rd peas 2/3 milo. they always flew the time I didn't mess with them because 9 were 06 birds. All summer they were on wheat, peas millo, and last few weeks some sauflour.About a week before the fly they all landed at 13 min.the only thing I can think of was heavy molt and the fact the corn was up the last time they flew and the day of the fly it was all cut 1/2hr before release. and they didn't want to fly over the field like usual. Heck I dont know. And I had my wife pull there water at midnight, that was a first. Tapp ---------- Tapp

One time I flew my birds when they were out of water and did not realize it until I noticed that their flight behavior was not the same. They flew low and not long at all, maybe 10 min. When they came down, I noticed they were out of water. To prove my finding was true, I purposely held the water the night before few days later and flew them the following day and sure they flew low and short. Therefore, I will not hold the water from my birds due to low performance issue.
