Utimately, you will have to check the municipal department of the area you live in.There are usually resrictions about set-backs off of property lines[out builings],and a building permit is required.A permit just to keep birds is sometimes required, sometimes they will set a limit to how many birds you can keep on your property[like 50 or so].If nothing is in the covenants of the sub division and the municipal department can't come up with anything I would go ahead with it.Keep it on a small scale with modular lofts and kit boxes that can be moved in case and particular neighbor dis likes the fact you keep pigeons.I had friends in new home subdivsions build their lofts to match their homes and did a good job streamlining the features to match the rest of the building attaching it to the home.Things like feathers at moulting time and the general noise of the birds, proper ventilation, and protection from the elements, should be considered for your design.Good luck and Aloha,Todd

Everything is legal until you get caught. Check the city ordinances for where you live. Go to your city's website, the click on ordinances, etc. This is Kalifornia, so I guarantee you that you are not technically allowed to keep more than two pigeons. But the general rules is that as long as no one complains, you are good to go.

I live in Woodland CA. I have pigeons with no problems...I called the City and they said that there was no rule...but if they were a health problem..then they would have to be evaluated. A lot of citys have a limit on FOWL....pigeons are not fowl...so you can get around that one. If you get along good with your neighbors..I would let them know that you are getting pigeons and give them a little history on the Brimingham roller. Let them know that they do not "Hang around" on roofs etc..that they fly for 30-60 min and then trap. Let them know that you will keep the loft clean and they will have all the vitamins and medications. Let them know that if there is EVER a problem that you will take care of it right away. You could print up info on the competitions, the history of the roller and facts about pigeons....that is what I did...my neighbors love them...I keep the lofts clean and I let the little kids check out the babies...None of my lofts are above the fence line..so that is a must.

Thanks for the comment. I live in Stockton California, I had these birds for a little over a year now. Just never flown any. I have been keeping them in small numbers (under 20) by giving away to friends/relative. I’ve checked the animal ordinance for my city and it says no fowl or any farm type animal should be kept in the city. Pigeons consider farm type animal? I have friendly neighbors that we get along fine. I had pigeons all my life from time to time. So far keeping them in the loft isn’t a problem, but I hate to have birds and not let them fly, and even more if I do let them fly and have the city take it away. So more or less it isn’t lawful to have pigeons in the city, right? Reason I asked, because I’m planning to build a twin kit box, and start flying whatever young I may have before it gets too cold. Again I appreciated the replies, and finally a roller forum.

Tikys, Pigeons aren't considered fowl or farm animals,so you should be fine flying your birds legally.Would think you can get away with having at least 50.Go for the max and breed 100!!!Make sure you have them good and hungry when you fly them so they come back in quick.Been through Stockton before, and isn't it a farm town with an abbattoir(cattle yards and all that)?Must be lots of folks with pigeons there. Hey,welcome to a fine website!!Good luck flying pred free. Yours in the Sport, Kelly.

Actually Kelly, in many cities and counties, pigeons are included as Fowl. They were here recently until the ban on keeping more than five roosters (attempt to ban cock fighting) was passed and the homer community got involved and got the county to pull pigeons from the fowl definition, citing they are not fowl. Problem is, they are a unique bird which has no ordinance category, therefore most cities, you will find pigeons included with any ordinance that includes chickens.

Guess I'm just lucky living in the country.Have close neighbours but one side they are from Belgium, and the pigeons remind him of his youth. The other side she is Jamaican and my rooster crowing reminds her of her childhood in Jamaica!! ---------- Kelly
