hey my birds died bye some hawk starting last month. I had 10 flying kit bird that I been having for couple months now from Johnny Smith, Hecter Coya and Alverado Hecter's friend. 7 were killed and now i only have one of each. I cant believed it. I mean Johnny's rollers that he gave me with no charge are my best performers. Now I only have 2 2year old and a 6 year old. this is my best hobby. Maybe starting next month I'll be looking for more. Are there anyone who could help me on finding some good rollers.

When you only were starting out with 11 birds why would you fly them? You should have locked them down and bred from the 11.It took the loss of 7 birds before you clued in that there was a problem? Once a hawk hits me I start changing patterns. A hawk will learn that if you let them out at 7 he will show up to eat at 7. I alternate my flying tines. Some days I won't let them out at all. You might have trouble getting more birds given to you. I personally don't mind giving birds away but not for someone to just feed their hawks. You need to find a flier in your area and learn how he raises and keeps his birds alive. Next I am always a little aprehesive to new pwoplw coming on asking for free birds. Don't get me wrong you may very well be legit buyt there are a lot of guys out there who are not. I hope you have learned a lesson from the slaughter of your first kit. C.J.

Obviously, the guy is starting out and making alot of the same mistakes most newbies make. Everywhere you read about Rollers, people are telling you to pick your breeders out of the air not the cage. The guy started with 11 birds(not enough) and the next breeding season starts around Jan.. If he doesn't fly the birds how is he supposed to pick his breeders? Either way he is going to need more birds. My suggestion would be to go back to the original breeders and explain the situation. See if they would be willing to breed you a full kit or two and sell you two or three proven pairs for BREEDING only. Good Luck,
P.S.- Not everyone looking for birds is up to no good. I had a member of this site send me three good pairs for free and we have never met! When I am in a position to do the same for someone else, I will.

Tough lesson. NEVER fly what you can't afford to lose. Get starter stock again and fly and pick THEIR young in the air. ITS, Will

Yes you pick your birds out of the air, but you must have enough experience to know what a good roller is in the first place. Some guys think because it flips once it is an excellent roller. Next you observe them in the air when you buy them ( if possible0 not when you get them home. Once you have them home you should know what you have a good idea of what you have. Next you don't just buy from a guy because he says he has rollers. If he isn't willing to give you any advice then he isn't worth your time. A good breeder will if asked give you an idea of the pairings he would make. 11 birds is plenty if you breed from them and don't fly them. He seemed to know the guys he got them from. Right now is a bad time for almost everyone.Hawks and other birds of prey are migrating and passing through our areas. Most of us are in lock down when it comes to flying our birds. Next if you are afraid that you don't have enough breeders uses fosters. This allows you to maximize your bird out put. Yes you are right not everyone on here is up to no good. But on the other hand not everyone on here is who they let on to be. There is plenty of people out there who just want to make the quick buck. once you have been on this and other sites for awhile you will relize this. No where did I say Cody was up to no good I just stated the facts. I am suspicius of people who come on asking fror birds. Especially when they already have breeders they are already connected to. Cody I wish you all the luck in the world I just hope you learned something from the loss of what most likely were good birds. If you are completly serious about rollers go back to the guy and offer to buy birds.

Cody, When I first got into the sport, I had several incidents due to my inexperience. My guys kept giving me birds. Probably 20 over the course of 6 months. Last time he gave breeders,my loft door blew open in a wind storm.I lost three birds out of six and a pair of eggs. Once again He fessed up a pair of breeders.
Flash forward to this summer. I was blessed with 20 pairs of breeders. Most of them were pretty decent birds. I immdeiately called my guy and gave him first pick. He took three pairs of Forbush birds. We were talking yesterday ,and he has had good results with them. I also offered him my last six chicks from this season two are from his stock. I will take them to him next week after they are weaned.
I guess the point is;if your guy is like most breeders he will give you some advice and a few more birds. Your time will come to help others in the sport especially your guy. Ya know ya might scrape a few perches, offer to feed while he is gone etc. Kinda smooths the way as well as giving you time to hang with him in his environment and learn a little something about rollers.
---------- If they don`t kit,they don`t score. Color don`t roll and peds don`t fly. It`s a comp thing,understand?

Its like you cant resist it you know. know i have 1 pair and an extra one. still pairing to see what i can do.
