I am in farm country and we grow alot of milo around hear, what do u guy's think about feeding milo to the pigeons can u feed it straight or would u mix it with other feed. what is the protein value. Thanks

Big Al,
Milo is what I call an accessory seed. You need to mix it with something. In most cases if you go to 75% milo for a day or two it will make your kit more active. It is high in carbohydrates and if fed in large amounts for extended periods of time will make your birds thin.
I feed pellets milo and wheat. Usually 1/2 cup of pellets,and feeding one cup of either wheat or milo and 1/2 of the other depending on what my birds need.

Milo is 8.9% protein,3% fat.Go to purgrain.com/ingredients and there you will find lots of info on grains.

Milo is a good feed for rollers. I feed 30 per cent milo when breeding. 65 percent milo to young bird kits. Old bird kits get something different from day to day depending on where I have them in condition and what Im preparing them for. Since you live where you can get lots of sorghum try to get the lighter coloured kind. It is less acidic and some time they prefer it over the darker coloured type. Ive never had young bird kits get too light when fed milo. You can feed them more of it if they seem too hungry. If your old bird kits fed milo seem to be getting light or acting like they want to fly high or like they want to overfly then you should not fly them for a week and feed them pellets and peas to put on some wieght and knock some of the condition off of them. If you store a lot of milo for too long it can get tiny bugs in it the size of lice. Kevin

I fly my old birds on the YO YO system to maintain them. I feed a nice mix the day I fly then 50/50 wheat and milo on the rest days. When preparing for a comp...it is straight wheat and fly the crap out of them..then two days rest before a comp...I give them a shot of protein after there last fly then it is wheat the first rest day and then milo the last rest day and they usualy come out looking pretty good...they have the strength and energy from the shot of protein and the milo gets them a littl more active. Velo summed it up best...it is a accessory feed...just a tool in the tool box.

I like the way my birds fly when they are on only Milo. They fly like a butterfly. Try it for a week or so, you will like it.

Sounds like they would be awfully prone to attack by the skysharks flying like that!!

I should have stated that I feed Milo only in the summer months and not for a long period of time (10 days in raw max). Now I feed them mix pigeon feed that includes Wheat, Milo, Peas, Safflower and Pellets. This time of year, their feed is for exercise and being fit to out wit a skyshark. If they have not shown what they are capable of all summer, I don't expect them to show me that while they are molting.
