Man, I am one pissed off dude!! I had a hawk get my best Ruby Roller hen in my A-team.....I did not see it happen..but she did not come in..and my neighbor showed me the pile of mealy bar feathers.....and I had to cull a bird that flew in today...whole back of the neck was ripped open beyond repair...and two of my young birds are missing!!!! I have yet to see the hawk...but my neighbor said a hawk was sitting on the fence last night (evening)...looking at my loft...I think it had a napkin around its neck and was holding a knife and fork...Man I am upset...I was going to stock that hen after the fall fly finals...I tried to pull her before..but she was a trigger bird.....Anyway....I need to take care of this situation...my neighbor that had the feathers in her yard is about 75years old...and she said..."shoot that SOB that did this to that beautiful pigeon" LOL!! Anyway..I am locking them down until I start training for the finals in early November.

Hey Pual, sorry to hear you are having such a bad time lately. It has hit us all this time a year. It almost ssounds like a falcon. They are relentless with rollers. They go after one and if they miss they go right into attack on another, and another until they catch one. Unlike the coopers that are more of a sprint runner and have to fly and rest and regroup for another attack. Guys I know who have falcons have rollers come down torn in places where the falcons hit them so hard they tare into them but dont always hang on to them. That is why I said it sounds kind of like a falcon. If it is it is probably passing through on migration? Hopefully. Do those red tails stick around for winter or leave? I am going to Post another message about Hawks that is important for us all to hear about but is a different issue than yours. Hope you solve your problem bud. Bill

Just wondering why we are flying so late?/ If the fog is here I doubt if anyone will be able to fly. They are judging the bay area on Oct 31st.

Good question Kevin. I know I would much rather fly as early as possible. Paul, you are on the right track. I locked mine up last week and plan on breaking them out in mid November. I will attempt to keep the losses to a minimum. Sorry to hear about the losses you suffered and I hope you are able to eradicate the SOB. Joe

HEy i have the same problem here. I have so many fricken hawks and falcons at my place MAN. COOPERS all the time and 3or 4 northern harriers or whatever. I had a flock of 48 homers white and splash colour. I love to watch them fly when i cant let out my rollers... NOW i have about 15 or so. I see dead pigeons eveywhere. and today i saw a harrier eating one of my white homers. (Moderated) let me tell you. THey are annoying . ANyway thats my biased side of things. GOOD luck to all with the hawk problem

Hey,

We are flying on November 30th. I wish it would have been in Mid November...but now I am not feeling that way...I may be happy with November 30th to lock down for a short time to get rid of my problem..LOL!! I myself would have been screwed if it was in the end of October..that would not have been enough time to build the birds back up a little. I usually do not have a big hawk problem...I usually lose 5-8 birds a year...but it is usually the ones passing through...The Red Tails are still here Bill...But I saw them fly off this morning to hunt and came back this afternoon...they chased off a cooper flying high..but it was on the move...anyway...I do not think it was a Falcon..I think it is a young Cooper...my neighbor said it was for sure a cooper sitting on my fence.. I just hate it when they have accidents. Anyway...I will keep them locked down and I may put a nice white roller in my little cage on top of the loft and do some stealth mode action....

DAVE...that sucks man.....I feel your pain...When I counted them and there was one short..I was like shit...I saw her coming down before the rest..when the whole kit was coming down..she was coming down with another bird... then I went in to get a chew of TABACY...and only 19...it was weird..the rest of the birds were not spooked at all....anyway...I knew right off what bird it was...

Tony...it was the one with the goofy eyes!

Paul

I understand about the Fog..but you can have fog anytime after the end of Oct...I hat October..because of the wind...I am kind of a little happy with November 30..gives me time to lock them down..build them back up and break them down a little...Anyway...GOOD LUCK TO ALL IN THE FINALS>>>D

Dave,

Those dates on the NBRC site are not right..I have a copy of the e-mail from Cliff Ball to Chuck Roe...The judge will fly in on the 29th of November. It is for sure the 30th..just talked to Chuck Roe Today..he is our regional director. Those dates were the old tentative dates

Dave, you should be right after So Cal. We fly our region finals here next Monday and Tuesday (23rd, 24th) then I believe the LA and desert areas are the 25th, 26th. Traditionally your region should be right after that. Good luck in the finals.

Paul. When the Finals judge was here we were talking about his schedule.I know he told me he was doing all of Ca. and it took all week before going on to the next one.I think the letter from Cliff was a misprint on the month and I think you better contact Cliff or have your RD do it and be ready on the 30th of this month.I sure wouldn't take a chance if it was me. Sorry about you losing your hen.I was so afraid I would lose 2 of my hens before the fly was over. You can be sure they went right to the breeding loft the same day the fly was over.LOL.Good Luck in your Finals.David

Hey Paul I had the same problem a little while a go. I now fly the birds at different times in the day just to keep them guessing. So far it has worked. C.J.

The fly dates for the finals for region 9B is October 30th!!! The preliminary schedule, published in August, set it on 10-31. The final schedule published two weeks ago moved it one day to October 30th. If there was a typo in an e-mail to Chuck, I aplolgize for the inconvenience. I sure wish somebody had contacted me about the discrepancy!! I have tried to contact Chuck by phone and e-mail for over two weeks, to get the airport to fly the judge out of and have gotten no response...Thanks David Strait for calling my attention to this.

Paul, Joe, guys,
It looks like I blew it...transposed the months in my e-mail to Chuck. So if it works better for you guys to fly on 11-30, that's when I'll get the judge to you. We'll work it out, one way or the other, whichever is best for you,
Cliff

Well,

We decided to go ahead and fly on Oct. 30th. No need to mess up the whole schedule...No worries Cliff..we are all human and mess up. Bill Crider will fly my birds while I am away deer hunting..the wife and my dad and my Aunt will be home...but...they did not want to fly the birds..LOL...SO I wrote a fly schedule for Bill C. and he will fly them for me. I put the food in zip lock bags with the date of feeding on them....so it should work out...Joe is cool with it and so Is Art Lee. We all would of liked an extra 4 or 5 days to prepare...but that is flying rollers...at least we have an excuse..if we choke...LOL LOL!! Dave, Brian and David S....thanks for the heads up and the e-mails...I was as busy as a one legged man in an ass kicking contest this morning..trying to get this all worked out. Joe ...thanks for keeping the judge at your house before the fly.

Flew the B-team this morning and not a hawk in the sky..except my friendly red tail...either the cooper was passing through...or the red tails are keeping them at bay.

I am flying this Sunday the 22nd. I have lost 4 birds since the qualifier, and as a result I am in almost full lockdown. I will fly tomorrow for my final prep fly, then nothing will go out until my finals fly. I normally fly in the evening after work, so I am hoping that my local falcon will not be looking for a meal on fly day.

Last week I had 3 different birds of prey hit the same kit. First a cooper, then a merlin, and finally the falcon. Not a fun day.
Can't wait to get them locked down.

I feel your pain with these predator attacks, guys, in trying to prep for a national championship during this time of the year. I hope you all will support the idea of moving the date of the national chamionship, when it comes up for discussion. Work with your RDs to let them know how you feel! That is the number one problem with this fly, and the problem with birds in severe molt is close behind as number two.

By the way, I want to acknowledge Chuck Roe, Region 9B's RD, and the Region 9B qualifiers, Paul, Joe, and Art for the awesome way they worked together with me to resolve this glitch, and also those of you who participated in sounding the alert (Thanks David!) so that we could avert potential disaster. But we also need to acknowledge Tony and this site (you too, Jay!) for providing such a great tool for communication and a place for roller guys to get together in cyberspace and talk rollers and competitions. Without this site, this problem may not have been detected amd averted so quickly and effeciently, with a minimum of hassle...except for Paul's hunting trip, that is!! I'll be rootin' for you buddy! My thanks to all of you. This is the sort of teamwork we need in this sport.

Cliff, I am glad that we are able to get this thing done the 30th of this month because the falcons are going to be terrible come the end of next month. I would also like to let you know that I spoke to Manny Manion today regarding the times that we need to meet and where and he says not a problem however he has no idea when or were he is suppose to meet to pick up Don. You might give him a call and clue him in so that we dont have another disaster waiting to happen. If you need his # give me a call (530)751-3010 and I will get it to you.
On a different note, You bet you can count on my support in trying to move this damn fly up. The preditors for most up this way get overwhelming this time of year. Joe Urbon
