I've got a sick youngster in my kit box. Looks like real bad strep throat, canker I'm guessing. I lost a bird about a month ago but I disposed of him before I thought about it. This one is out of good blood though. I ordered some 4 in 1, but it will be a few days before it gets here. Is there any home remedies out there that will keep it alive till then. I did isolate him, but what are the chances it will spread? I cleaned the water bowl. I guess I should dose the whole kit when the meds get here? Does any body have any good ideas?

Yes, treat the kit box it was in as it is contagious through the drinking water, but seldom spreads that way. I'd recommend Spartrix, Carnidizole or Ridzol to treat it. One broken up tablet of either for two days and it will go away fast provided the bird isn't past the point of return.

Thanks guys, but it was dead when I got up this morning. I ceaned the water bowl with clorox today and I will keep apple cider vinager in the water for a while. A guy quit at work and I've been working double night shifts lately. And with mister cooper around I just haven't spent the time with my kit lately. Not ever having a sick bird in years, it just caught me off guard. Won't happen again! I do thank you for the replies though. Some of you guys are good people and thats why I check every post everyday! I got the litter mate up today for the first time today and it started tail riding in the first 5 min. My old birds don't start that for weeks of flyng! I thik I'm finally gonna see real rollers by spring. Keepwriting and I will keep learning! My goal is to compete in a couple of years, and to hopefully put some faces to names! Val

Before the breeding season, treat your breeders for canker, ecoli and de-worm them. Give them the meds one month before the breeding season starts. Best to give them 4 N 1 or 3 N 1 medications for 'preventative' measure. You will not have any of those issues while the breeders doing their business. The young will be healthy and without the worry about if the young is going to make it or not. I don't like to use medications for this or that but I make sure they are prevenatitively medicated before they start breeding. The last thing you want is an out break of any disease. Good luck.

Jay, You mentioned treating breders for Ecoli. What med are you using for that? Or are you depending on the 3 N 1 or 4 N 1 to take care of it? Cliff

Cliff, I use 3 N 1 for Canker, Cocci and worms. I also use Amoxicillin for Paratyphoid and E-coli and also as 'antibiotic' against many diseases. I use all this stuff once a year before the breeding season starts.
In my birds medicin cabinat I always keep the following Medications in case I need them immediatly:
3 In 1 - a great combination of medication for the 3 most common of health problems; Canker, Cocci and worms.
Amoxicillian - a very effective way to treat paratyphoid and E-coli.
Amtyl powder - a broad spectrum anibiotic to altrenate when I use Amoxicillian.
Sore Eye treatment - Heals cuts, sores and also useful on pox lesions around the eyes.
Sulmet - I use it for Sour Crop and it is commonly used to treat Cholera, Cocci, paratyphiod, kidney infection and some types of colds.
Also I keep the following vitamins:
Apple Cider Vineger - for added minerals and vitamins. Calicium Gluconate - to prevent rough eggs. Foy's Pigeon Builder - to provide most popular vitamins. Red Cell - for vitamins, iron and minerals. Top Plus - for glossy, silky and healthy feathers growth during the molt. Bath Salt - for weekly bathing. A worming Gel and parytyor II (spelling) for mites and lice to use twice a year.

Cliff, Tony carries the 4 N 1 which is even better product. It is also for E-coli. Check it out uner Roller Products Tap. Thanks.
