I just wanted to know what you all use for bedding in your nest bowls. I use the felt pads and I give them Pine neddles. I start breeding in Jan. and its really cold--I was thinking Of putting somethig else like pine bedding to not have as many frozen eggs. I do swap out the first egg with a dummy until the second egg is layed--this helps alot.Heating the loft is out of the question. any ideas?

mike,
I use the throw away paper bowls. I stack usually 3 of them together. Each one helps insulate the next. I think this along with the pads and whayever nest material you choose they should be ok. when the first round is out of the nest I pull off the top bowl and there is the next one ready to go. By the time you get to the last bowl its late feb. or march, and hopefully not so cold... good luck with `em.

Feel sorry for you folks that live in the cold parts.Haven't seen temps below 20F for years on the coast of BC.Japanese Current keeps things pretty moderate here.I built plywood boxes for nesting last Jan.,and used pine shavings and pine needles for their nests.Found the wood boxes get too much moisture built up so I'm making all new wire cages for breeding time. That way I'll be able to see what's going on in there easier.

Thanks to all --I use the plastic bowls from foys. They look almost like the old clay bowls.I guess I will have to experiment alittle.I have heard of some people using plastic bubble paper underneath the felt pad for added insulation.Just trying to think of ways to cut my losses due to cold temps.
Thanks, Fr.Mike
