I am just wondering if there is any younger people intersted in raising pigeons anymore ?? I remember when I was a kid there were dozens of young kids keeping birds !! And now I know mainly all older guys that are in to raising and flying rollers !! A friend of mine and I have talked about this .. Whe I was young I started out catching commons and if you found one with a little color you really thought you had something !! My dad bought me my first rollers when I was about 12 yrs. old !! He payed 5 dollars for 6 birds for me !! I don't think you could even give the younger people birds for free TODAY !! Ya know times sure have changed in the last fifty years !! If it don't hook up to a T V set or Video game they don't care !! They sure are missing a lot !!

I have a grandson a granddaughter that are interested in them. They are going to be doing 4-h projects with them. It definatly isn't the same as when we were kids though. The outdoor movie screens, billboards, and bridges were alot of fun climbing and netting birds back in the day!!!!!

I am thinking about trying my luck at a portable kit in the next year or two. Maybe with birds that are a little to deep for comp just for excitement. I want try flying them at events such as before outdoor games, rodeos, we even have a lot of events at the city park in the summer.I think we have to get kids or even adults attention. People don't stay at home anymore, so maybe I can take the birds to where they are. I thought it might be a good way to promote the hobby. Don't know if it will work but something inside me is telling me to try it!

My kids when they are young lobe them but my eldest daughter found boys recently and has absolutely no interest anymore. I am hoping that ventually as they matter and settle in they will return to the hobby. I think my daughter will be back as soon as she realizes boys are evil or atleast teenage boys areLOL. C.J.

Thank all of you for the responce you gave .. I feel the same. There has to be some way to introduce them to younger people !! I am so tired of hearing pigeons called rats with wings !! In my town of about 150,000 they have turned loose falcons and hawks to kill the commons !! They use to be downtown !! The city had the fire dept. go under bridges with their high pressure water hoses and spray out all the nesting places that were under them !! KILLING HUNDREDS OF BIRDS !! And then of course the falcons and hawks did the rest !! Again Thanks To All of You for feeling the way I do !! Me and a couple of friends thought we were the only ones who cared ! THANKS AGAIN !! MAYBE WE CAN GET THE WORD OUT TO YOUNGER FOLKS !!

Presently our youth-aged culture isn't conducive to the development of a hobby that relates to animal husbandry like it was when most of us middle aged fellers were young. My story is like most my age, lived in an area where I was allowed to keep pigeons and any other critters I brought home. Grew up in a time when we had to create our own entertainment, not have it available for us in the form of a video game, Ipod, internet, MTV, etc. All the kids in my neighborhood (which is a horse town), most now teenagers, including my own son, could give a rat's ass about pigeons, chickens or any other type of livestock. They would rather play their video games or do their best to look cool, etc. I'm sure the same situation can be found everywhere to one degree or another. If you want kids to get involved, you have to make animal husbandry part of their environment. From that point on, it becomes a matter of whether or not they have the "pigeon gene".

Seriously, have a son and two nephews raised in a semi-country setting.Taught them all to hunt and fish, had dogs, pigeons and the sort around all the time. They are all growed and one still hunts and fishes. He has a couple of bird dogs too but no pigeons. My last hope is my four year old grandson but he's 800 miles away.Maybe I'll have to get him some homers.LOL ---------- Ron

electric-man, I agree. the portable idea has crossed my mind a few times. even as far as setting up a booth at a festival or two, maybe with videos. I started the same as a lot of you. all the kids in town, a small town, had pigeons of all breeds including commies. we all gave them up eventually as we discovered things like girls and cars, and girls and motorcycles, and girls... now after all theese years myself and anouther of my childhood friends both got back into the pigeons. we both gotbit by the roller bug 5 years ago and ran into each other at a swap meet after not seeing each other for a few years. the point is if we could find ways to get kids into pigeons , even if they give it up for a while , some might at least re start later... good post dude

im 22 and getting back into rollers, started raising them with my father in 1989 up until 1998. It is still a passion thats run through my veins. Brian is right, its all this technology with video games and computers, the internet and tv programs that has really put a halt in the pigeon hobby for the young generation. Not only pigeons, but in many hobbies and activities. I teach Karate and Arnis De mano ( a filipino stick and knife fighting art) and in recent years, especially this past year their has been a SIGNIFICANT decline in kids training at our studio. Its really unfortunate, and I do see negative effects that go with it, as I work in middle school physical education. The kids are so young and many so overweight and/or out of shape. I read in the newspapers of them puttin blame on fast food and diet. They really need to put blame on the technology and its effects on the children as well. I really do hope their somehow be a comeback in owning pigeons in the future, just my 2 cents.
