I haven't been on this site very long .. But I think this is a great way to express ones self and get advice !! I haven't run across any mention of differant eyes in Rollers !! When I was a kid that was a Real Big thing !! everyone wanted Pearl Eyed birds.. Us kids traded birds amongst ourselfs and that was one of the main things we looked for !! We had a roller clud with a Jr. membership and had we showed them. But we always tryed to keep Pearl eye birds !! But back then they were Flying Rollers not the new crossed up Show Rollers of today !! Half roller and half modena.. But like I said you wanted pearl eye not orange eye or bol eye !! Do some of you remember those days ?? I am talking about the 1950's !! I am sure some of you do ??

Hey Nick!!!
Howsitgoin??How are your birds doing?I've been flying pred free, clear skies no rain here on the west coast yet,not even a frost.Haven't lost a bird to the hawks for over a month maybe more.Out of about 60 birds flying,I've had 3 rolldowns so far. With no preds giving any real hassles,my birds are getting a good chance to develop.
Regarding colour of eyes,my Neible birds are all pearly eyed or orange and my Barrett's are that dark colour, whatever you call that. One of my best Barrett's has one pearly eye and one dark eye. Some guys say don't stock a bird like that, but I don't really understand why.Can someone give me some insight as to why a bird with 2 different coloured eyes would be detrimental to ones breeding program??

Santandercol, forget about it, what everyone says about the different color eyes, man you dont see the dam eyes up in the air when the bird is spinning. That is the most ignorant statement said, to this day!! I have stocked some bull eyed birds that were extremely great birds in the air.

Hey Nick!
What's up buddy!
Haven't talked via e-mail for a while.

I've got news for you my man, if you're all those things you are not well! :-) You're as crazy as ever!! Probably those different color eyes!! LOL!
Birds doing okay?

Geeeeeez Greed!
Take a deep breath and count to 10!!! LOL!

Kelly,
Breeding for particular eye colour for appearance purposes is one thing, those variations do not effect a roller's performance. They just need to be able to see out of them to evade the air sharks.
Just my opinion.

Naw, T-TOWN if it looked like i came on strong , my apoligies, not upset at all. The thing is that it is all a personal prefrence and some hobbyist make a general statment and take away from the birds ,such as color or eye colors. I also have been told by hobbyiist that they would not keep a bird if they had bull eye or had bull eyes, i would ask them why and they could not answer why. I have seen many of outstanding spinners of mixed eyes.
The answer to your other question is that i have been into rollers for about 30-35 years. Once again not upset at all.

BIG AL, whats going on? Took a deep breath and it didnt help,LOL ,I'll try agian but i'll count in spanish LOL.
Later dudes

To Greed

I was just Talking about people that feel that way about certain color eyes !! Myself I have Odd eye and mixed eye birds !! And I know what your saying !! It don't hurt the roll !! I have been raising rollers for 52 yrs. and learn something new all the time.. I do know one thing peoples opinions on what is right or not in their minds .. Change over the years ..Thats all I was asking about !! And when I started out if you showed rollers they were flying rollers !! Not halfbreads like they show today !!
Thank you.

Hey T-town,
I raised rollers in the 50's and 60's and what you said is true.Pearl eyes were the preference,Bulleyed and odd eyed birds were culls or given to kids just starting.I think this was the case because a lot of fanciers put more emphasis on showing their birds.Back then there were no Show Rollers, just the dual purpose Roller.Birds that possessed the good Type for show were not flown as much for fear of loss. The performance phase took back burner. Now days the birds are bred more for spin qualities, and the birds of today are better performers thanks to the new generations of Rollermen.I think we have all found out that breeding for performance is a job in itself, breeding for both is near impossible.Just my opinion. I started raising rollers in the 60's and I never heard of this before. It is possible that it was a colloquial thing in your area because the breeders of old as Lester Lehmeyer, Al Matthews, Ralph Bellamy, Bill Patrick etc. in my area never esteemed pearl eyed rollers over orange and neither did I.
