I guess it depends on the conditions. Like where you live {weather} and if you have hawks problems at certain times of the year. Around here I put the birds together around Feb 14th. And usually have birds out by the first week or two of March. And by the time they are ready to put outside its the first of april. And by the then the hawks are leaving. Every now and they you have one hang around for a week or more. But the young birds have to sit in the settling cage for another week before I turn them out on the roof. Now I fly and breed between March to Sept. Counting all of march and sept that gives me 7 months of flying. When Sept. rolls around I have to be careful and fly around the hawks. So I lock down the birds that is doing well until the following spring. Now I won't lockdown something unless it has been on the wing for a while. Because if you don't they are very hard to get on the wing the following year.
Now if I lived in Southern Mississippi I could breed a little sooner or later and have my birds ready for the competitions. And while I was down there I lived on a farm that had 1500 acres and no trees around the place for a very good distance. Where you could fly just about everyday. And you could breed during the winter months because on the adverage the water only freezes 3 times a year. And by 9am the ice would be melted.
So just sit back and see what others are doing in your area.
Best of luck

right on Brian. here in Indiana I start in Jan. First young go in the kit box sometime in feb. By march or April I got a few flying already. I can get at least 7 or 8 months of good air time on the young, depending on if the hawks get bad or not. so far this year I`ve been real lucky. only two young birds lost to hawks this fall. still flying every day, weather permitting. I learned my lesson flying in bad weather....I hope???
