How would you go about letting a kit of young birds out for the first time when they are not strong enough to out fly a predator,And have just started to fly.
I have already lost a kit of 10 birds this way.2 where taken by a pair of hawks, and the rest just scattered, out of the 10 only 3 came back towards evening time.
Please I am new to rollers and really need some advice on these Cooper's Hawk attacks.

Ultra,

From someone that gets hammered by coopers,I wait till March. Not the ideal solution but at least you'll have birds left to fly.My opinion

Just wondering how infrequent attacks are from march on,Would the attacks not be worse because of the hawks having to feed their young?

In Ontario i find March to Sept. works well. I have very little problem during that time. Bob

Frank,
For the most part what preds that are left around come March turn their focus to the song birds that are returning.
Lots more of them around gives them easier pickens. Then come September the song birds start leaving just when the coopers start to migrate and they will key in on your rollers because the are "tied" to the loft.Hope this helps.

Birdman Ron,
Do you mean the coops get tied to the loft?I have a young one around at the moment and he just sits in the trees waiting.

Kelly,

What I meant by tied to the loft is your rollers won't leave on there own.So the coopers knows where to find them.
And if he is sucessfull one or twice it may take "extreme" measures to discourage him.

Ron,
Yeah, thanks. This young coopers hanging around my place has never had success yet but doesn't want to leave.I'll try the trap again today.Neighbours are to close for extreme measures.

Ultrasonic, you should breed and fly the youngsters after the hawks migration. Which is mid of March here in NJ, USA

ultra, also your flying those newbies now because you probibly breed too late also. Breed from Feb. thru June-July or so... if you breed past that you run in to problems like this, trying to get them to learn how to fly too late in the year. know what I'm sayin?

Guilty as charged,as someone who is new to rollers I was anxious to start a kit.But guess I will have to wait till Feb or Mar of 07.But I have about 20 young left that can not be flown now.Can they be flown in March or is it just to late now to fly them at all?I obviously can't breed them before they are flown and tested. And will it still be possible to fly them in 4 or 5 months. So what would you recommend I do with them,or will they only be good as feeders?

Frank,
Wait till March and fly them out. What have you got to lose?
If they don't pan out you can still use them as fosters.
Won't know till you try!My opinion anyway.
