Hi Guys: do any of you have what could be described as pure Penson after all this time. if so i wonder how they commpare to-day or in years gone by for performance. i have been told they were a smaller bird & did not handle the wind well I DO NOT WANT TO START A DEBATE ON WHAT STRAIN IS BEST. AS I FIRMLY BELIEVE THE PERSON FEEDING THEIR BIRDS IS THE ONE WHATEVER THE STRAIN THAT HAS TO BE SATISFIED. thanks to whoever could tackle this topic Bob in Ontario

Bob, Let me give this a try. Do you really think that there is pure Pensoms around now? I wouldn't think so, what I mean is they are of the Pensom family. But I don't think that others had the same thinking and breeding practices as Bill. You can take a family of birds and breed them the way you see fit and they will be differenet in a lot of way, with-in a few years. Either good or bad they will be different. I can tell you first hand. When I bought the Roe birds I thought I was going to be the next World Cup winner. Boy did that hit home with-in a couple of years. We all looking at breeding this to that at different angles. And then there is some who just turns the birds loose in a loft and let them pair themselves up. About performance as of yester-years and today. Well I believe there were plenty of style and performance. But they were in the hands of only a few. Where today there is style and performance at just about every back yard. Some more refined than others but it's there. Computers and websites will help a lot more people get better birds and give them a better idea what to look for. And with the postal service accepting live freight it makes it so much easier to get the birds in your hands. Where before they had to be flown to a hub and you had to pick them up. It was very expensive and some didn't want to go to the extreme. So you see it is easy for a person to get into this hobby and get some good birds if they try a little and do some studing. Where before you had to be close and spend plenty of money. Best of luck Brian Middaugh

Bob i know what you mean. After 3 generations the birds are a bit different. But the 3638/1180 John Destouet birds are probably the closest to the pure Pensom line out there they are also a line that doesn't need a cross the quality and depth and velocity is all there.John M.

There are many individuals, including myself, who keep the Pensom family. I would not say that John's is the closest Pensom line out there. I will state that he has a close family of Pensom's. Herb Sparks, Bruce Cooper and many others are true breeders of the family also and I am sure that there are others whom we are not aware of.

Thanks Scott.
Bob, I have Neible birds, which are said to be of the line coming originally from Bill Pensom's loft.I've only had them since April, being new to this hobby, but what I can tell you about my birds for one,if the wind is over 12 to 15 mph, often they will get blown downwind maybe 4 city blocks before getting up high enough and coming over the house again.Never lost any to that problem, but don't fly my birds if the wind much above 15.I've been told to avoid culling any of these guys before 1 year. Some start to show around 5 to 6 months. ---------- Kelly

Montiel's start was from Bruce Cooper who has 100 percent Pensom rollers. 99% of Montiel's bloodline was from Bruce.

Hi guys.
I think there are many, many families, including my own, that go back to pure Pensom "BRED" birds. Does it really matter though? Perhaps in 1966 it would have mattered, but today, in 2006, it's up to us to create new families. Pensom himself sourced some of his greatest birds from others...I am of the opinion that once you get birds from a reputable breeder, and you chose the matings and fly them out...Everything you put away from that point forward is what matters. Don't get me wrong...I love to read the old peds, but dead birds don't win competitions, or move a program forward. JMO

I am glad i got barret rollers starting out here as i can fly them on windy days and have fun watching them. A friend told me that you have to really pick your days flying penson rollers as they will be blown away like mosquitoes......Dave
