I use to have plona birds, i got them from a guy name tom williams in kansas city, im not sure if they are pure but the ones i had are very good kitters but they are not frequently and mines take around 7 to 9 months before they start coming into the roll which was a little to long so i sold them all, mines are medium birds mostly are lavenders and black and whites rarely any other colors

Plona birds are in the bloodlines of a lot of families. Hatcher birds (Continentals) have Plona bloodlines. Dick Stevens birds also. Plona birds at one time where the birds to have. They will tend to be on the large size in comparison to today's birds, but through some selective breeding you can breed them down if you like the smaller bird.

A good Plona bird will have all the goods(of couse any good bird has all the goods; hense the word good-LOL)

Many people feel they are on the stiff side, but if you give them a DOUBLE DOSE of grizzle it will make them hotter(LMAO). I am just kidding about the DOUBLE DOSE of grizzle. Just an inside joke, sorry.

You can breed and feed for frequency.

If you got Plona birds being offered to you it may be worth your while to consider. I would watch them fly first if possible and make sure the breeder is sound.

Tom Hatchers Hatcher strain was based on Plonas. His Continentals dont have Plona blood in them.

The pedigres I have from Tom and Cole Hatcher show the Plona bloodlines. The books he has written speaks of Plona bloodlines in his birds. I believe Tom.

Nick,

The Plonas are still the bird to have.Guys like Tom Hatcher, the late Dick Stephens,Roger McVay have done a good job moving the line forward.Continentals are a blend of pure Smith/Plona,Charles McFaes[Taylor birds],and NBRC 62'#2288 red mottle cock,a son of PRC#255 Pensoms Red Headed Hen.I have some A-style rollers in my continental line of birds,up close to#266,#8409,#425,#12-low freeze. The continentals swept 1st,2nd,and 3rd in our first futurity fly,2nd and third place went to myself.
I will be flying pure continentals for Don Simpson, representing Hawaii in the region 13 Fall fly.
I work with several strains and so far Continentals are the deepest quality bird flying here.I expect that to change next year, will be seeing birds bred from breeders from Ivan Hanchett,RickSchoening,Campell/Billings,and my latest aquisitions from Dave henderson and Richard Hayes.Aloha,Todd

Todd , how did Stevens and McVay move the plonas forward ? they didn't fly their birds , they sure could write some impressive pedigrees though.
Actualy I believe that Don Oulletts three bird family is Plona , Don is a flier !!!

Scott,

They didn't fly them or they didn't fly them in national competition? I haven't flown mine in national competition yet, but I can tell you I have "advanced" mine.

Does any one know why Hatcher crossed the Mcfaes birds with the plona’s?

The so called "Plona" birds that I have flown in the past were not any better than other good families I have flown. Two things that I did see in my birds were that they stayed fertile forever and they did'nt always throw young true to breeder size. I've seen them as small as a Figurita and as large as a small Homer. The size did'nt seem to effect performance that much.

Scott,
I honestly don't think Tom had the time to fly competitions. He owned several large fitness centers, but he was and still is a roller fanatic.I have spent hours on the phone picking his brain abouut rollers and is still very interested in how his birds are doing.Roger is a pigeon man through and through and does not keep crappy birds,he doesn't like the big ones that pop up in the line, and does not like to get them to small, whether they roll or not, there is a size that only his hand tells him what is good and the quality of the spin is everything. With his 40 plus years in rollers ,claims the Continentals his favorite, and has tried several familys.I think competions have come along way in the last 15 years, and these old timers flew for themselves, friends, and people who didn't know pigeons could spin like a ball in the air.I think without knowing these guys day in day out that was there basis for flying, pleasure. For that matter where is Plonas fly record .These guys are like the founding fathers of BR's and the NBRC ,has benefitted in one way or another even if they just paid their annual dues or someone has benefitted from a bird they have obtained from them.I can genuinely say that I have.Competions don't make the measure of a man,its the grace and cooth one exudes from his experiences .P.s. Thanks for the pat on the back its along time since I've had one,lol....Aloha,Todd

Todd , I wasn't slamming the Plonas at all !! any family not flown and bred off the perch and pedigree is going to be a hard road.

Sac spinners,
I got birds five years ago from the same guy in KC...paid way too much money for inbred pedigreed 514 Pensoms, Plonas, and a pair of Homer Coderre birds, guaranteed to score points. I raised a hundred birds that year.....not one would do anything but flip or roll 5 ft. max. So I flew out the breeders....not one spinner....I culled the whole lot. Since then, I wouldn't give you a plug nickle for an inbred pedigreed bird....just my personal experience and prejudice. (I know there are good ones out there). Actually, though, I did keep one black hen...a Plona bird that has excellent speed, 20-30 ft. once a minute, good quality. I have been flying her in my A-kit ever since. I have hesitated to cross her in to my family. I would like to find good Plona cock for her some day....
YITS,
Cliff

Cliff what the hell are pedigrees ? they are the breeding records behind that bird and nothing else , of coarse you won't see this on crossed up color mongrals.

My birds come down off a Plona hen from Hatcher and a Bradford cock. I really didn't get much with either by themselves but have really enjoyed what I have been able to do with them mixed. I also judged a guy by the name of Brad Winward in Utah that is flying Plona birds from Jim Brown and they had great depth and style, just no heart. Couldn't stay together much past the 10 minute mark. If he ever gets a handle on them boy look out. Joe

Joe, I met Paul Bradford many years ago at one of the California Classic Flys. He was a real top notch guy.
Do you know the background of his birds?

Russ, unfortunately I do not. I am told the birds I have derive from Pensom birds but then don't they all. LOL. I got with Tom Monson while I was in Utah last year and he tells me Paul brought birds home from all over so who knows. I am also told that Pauls blacks and rec reds go back to Jim Browns Plonas but there again I will never know. All I know is they worked when I crossed them together 15 years ago and are still working for me many generations later. Joe

Ball rollers, i have got alot of birds from this guy and also breed alot of birds from them, just like you i paid way too much around 250 to 300 a pair, i guest i was roller nutz at the time, i only got a couple of good bird that i ever bred from them ,but there is a plona cross with a jac that i like thats spins a good 30 feet, the birds got roll but they produce alot of roll down, and they are definetly not worth the money, to people who is starting in the sport make sure you know the guy your buying it from has good birds or is well known and get good reference on his birds before you buy it and don't waist your money
