Man...this sucks...when everything is going good you lose birds. I lost 15 birds out of my A-team...got 5 back. THAT SUCKS!!!!! I lost all my Ruby Roller except for 2 (05-1 cock and 1 Hen....The others that returned were , 1 Campbell 05 hen and 2 Mort Emami 04 and 05 hen. I hope some more come in tomorrow...I put up my young bird team to bring them down with no luck....At least I have 18 bird in my B-team and 22 in my young bird team....Man I am pissed...it was a damn cooper that drove them up!!

Yea Paul it is a bad feeling for sure , been there, you should get a few more back.
This sport sure can get interesting and disapointing , I put away my cream to stock and trying to rebuild the team now.
At least I can't get hurt no matter what happens to the team now , good luck

Sorry to hear that Paul. Not like you. Hope you get them back.

Touch wood never had an over fly yet. Some time some birds spend the night on the roof but they have always been there in the morning. A team too. Fingers crossed.

Hey Paul, sorry to hear you lost birds. We were just talking about stocking some of those birds weren't we? Was that dark check Emani hen one of the missing ones?

As for me, I decided a few years ago to not take as many chances with really promising birds once the preds became year-round in Bellflower. I would just stock em and see what they could produce.

Right now I am letting my kits out sporadically (every other day and choosing different times of the day) just to give them airtime through the winter so I can have something for the World Cup.

I might even reduce the time between excercise days if I any preds buzzing them regularly. I occasionally get a hawk or falcon fly through but so far it seems I have been able to make enough noise to distract them and they keep going (knock on wood).

Paul,
I had the same thing happen to me twice last Winter. Trying to get a kit up after work. Cooper scares them up, and they just will not come down. Then it gets dark. I lost most of my 2nd and 3rd rounds for the year.
My A team is locked down and my promising young birds will only fly on the weekend when there is lots of time to get over being scared up by a predator.
I thought I was going to have a problem last night. A Merlin hit them twice, and they didn't come down until late. Whewwww!!!!!
hope you get some more back.

Paul,
It's always hard to lose birds like that. For sure.Lost 3 last week to the coop chasing them up for 3 hours and into the trees I guess some were injured.I'm keeping them all in till spring now.Damn coop was fluttering around my lofts today, scaring the shit out of everybody out there.I think it's better we all just go into preservation mode if there are hawks around. They destroy your birds in no time flat. And the really annoying part is they haven't been successful in taking a bird for lunch.I've seen 'em fly away empty.Man.Sorry 'bout that dude.

Also sorry to hear of your lost birds. Man, where do all these lost birds end up ??? I find myself watching the kits of feral birds around local towns and the farms as I go back and forth to work and such. Always expecting to see one roll.Last spring I only had One holdover kit to play with and lost it much to my own blame. I should`of been more mindfull of the weatherman.

Last weekend I was flying a young kit and got hit by a cooper. The kit stayed down but a little black check got caught pretty quick. Luckily, I seen it and yelled as it grabbed the bird. He dropped it without any harm to it.Thing I noticed was the bird it hit was one of the few without any paint on it. I`ve been flying when I get a chance to pull all the birds who show some roll. If they are developing into the roll , then they go in the loft till spring, if no roll I will keep flying till I see progress. Anyways, I thought this was interesting cause I seen in anouther post or e-mail a while back about the hawks not liking birds with colored paint on them...Hmmm....

Anybody else got any similar findings or was this just a fluke that he hit the non-painted bird???

Sorry to hear that paul I went to through the same things last year just like you are doing right now to the coopers, by either getting scared off or getting hit on everyday but i had more luck this year i haven't lost one yet, there is too many wild pigeon around where i live at now so they go for those birds, im hoping i don't lose none through out the season and good luck paul on your birds returning

Paul, Sorry to hear about your luck. Hopefully more birds will be back tomorrow. I also had a scare with my birds this morning. Had a kit of 23 up fooling around and a large flock of tweetie birds flew by. Next thing I knew they were in the middle of the flock and heading west with them until they were out of sight. After about 20 mins. I started to get that sick to the gut feeling when I spotted them off to the north about 3 or 4 miles out. They didn't seem to be in a hurry to get home. I guess Morts' family has some homing instinct.

MAN PAUL, What a horrible feeling. I feel for you. I truly hope that you get more of them back. I know you have worked hard to build the team up to were they are and it just rips your heart out to see them go to the roller gods that way.Keep your hopes up and in the unlikely event that no more return just remember this. You raised them once,if the blood is there you should be able to do it again. Joe

Nick....I still have the super chicken....I had bumped him down to the B-team...to help the B-team come along...He still rolling like crazy..LOL!! He is still an A-team bird....He was just on special assignment with the B-team....He will be back in the A-team for sure..

Joe...the blood is still there...I have the B-team..that are all 06 birds but 2....and I have 18 in that bunch..and they are starting to show there stuff....the young bird team has 3 or 4 that are ready for a promotion...and I have 22 in there...so I am still ok...it just sucks losing the birds that were flying good together....I am glad that I got my 04 hen back in my A-team..she is a damn good bird. So I have 46 birds total...so I am still in the game..LOL!!

The shitty thing is that the hawk just split the kit and kept going..did not even go after one bird...he was on a mission headed South....Anyway...I will keep you all updated...see what comes in...in the morning....I am putting the young bird team up...first thing and then the B-team...so I hope they make it back...

Thanks for the comments...it keeps me from crying..LOL!!
God...I hate the twisted in the gut feeling....1 step forward and two steps back...

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you, Paul. That's really a bummer. I had an entire kit straggle in over a week, last year, after a similar experience. I never expected to see them. Just keep flying other kits and don't lose hope!

I feel your pain my friend. Been there done that. Although, it was not a cooper that caused the overfly rather the jet stream in the sky. I hope you get them all back. It is truely a hard pill to swallow. Take care of that SOB.

Got one more back today.....but it did not return to my loft...a guy called me from Sacramento and said that he had one of my birds. The bird trapped with a team of his high flyers...He read me the band number and sure enough it was a little Blue check that was in my A-team. That guys house is 24 miles away. He said it was healthy...just real hungry...it is times like these that I am glad that I put the custom address bands on my birds. Tony...this is the little blue check that I sent you the photo of...Bill crider is picking the bird up for me tomorrow. I am excited!!

Hi Guys i realize that a lot of you live where you are not allowed to discharge firearms. i am fortunate to be able to , i do not fly unless i have time to watch, & i sit with my 22 cal. on my knee & any sign of a BOP gets a shot in their direction. This works every time for me in fact for the day. good luck Bob in ontario

Well,

Got a phone call today...someone found another lost bird....but the bird was so weak that it did not make it. This lady was a vet and tried everything...it could not even stand up....She was so sad....I am glad that I invested in the address bands...anyway..this bird was 32 miles away in Sacramento. They are dropping the bird off to me tomorrow.
