Hello Everyone, Just wanted to know, so who to ask? You guys. Well I wanted to vaccinate my birds for pmv and salmonella (paratyphoid). How long between one vaccine and the other? and how long before breeding? How many cc? and all this other good stuff. Just want to start this year on the right foot. Never vaccinated my birds so I would appreciate all of your info. Thanks, Art Gaona

The dose you give for a racer is .5cc per bird (PMV)...I usually give a little less than that for a roller...I usually go about .4cc per bird. You vaccinate annually. You give the dose subcutaneous or under the skin in the back of the neck between the back and the base to the skull. Use a spray bottle with Alcohol and spray the back of the neck..when the feathers get wet you can see the skin..put the needle in at an angle and inject. Then rub the area for a second and move to the next bird. Make sure you don't go to far in...or you will inject into the crop....you do not have to pull back on the suringe to check for blood...you usually do that when you go intermuscular (into the muscle).
I hold the bird with my left hand with the breast of the bird in my palm....with the bird facing my wrist. I hold the bird against my body and spread the feathers with my thumb and fore finger...thumb is at the base of the head with my fore finger spreading the feathers toward the back of the bird...your other three fingers will be against your body...in between your body and the bird. I place my right outer palm against the birds back and then inject. I hope that explains it. I would wait a couple of weeks in between the two vaccinations.
I usually vaccinate my birds in late October. After the Fall fly, Breeding and before the cold winter.

You can do both at the same time, both are dead viruses, you can breed right away. Scott

Thanks Scott....I was not sure about birds...doing both the same day....I know on my livestock..they have two rear legs so we would give a shot on one leg and then the other....Only one neck on the pigeon and was not sure if it would hurt them...that is why I said to wait a couple of weeks....See...even I learned something new today..>

Ron, I do, but put just a single needle in the vaccine bottle and leave it there useing just that needle to draw out of the bottle with, this will keep the vacine from being contaminated for later use. As for the PMV vaccine, many no longer vacinate yearly due to fertlity losses, the best defence is not to bring anything else in bird wise, at the very least be very very careful and if in doubt don't do it. Also if you know someone that is having problems, keep them out of your back yard and stay out of there's. When ever I visit other lofts I shower and change clothes and shoes once I get home (try to).
