I had a hen that i recently paired up with a cock on Thanksgiving and that hen laid an egg. The pair don't seem to get along and they still fight. Is it possibly that they mated and the hen laid an egg or could it be that the hen just laid an un-fertile egg? Is it okay to feed breeders hen scratch?

Give the egg about a week and take a flashlight at night and hold it up to the egg and you should be able to see blood veins if it is fertile. I do not feed hen scrath to my breeders because the cracked corn seem to give my little ones a canker problem, or somekind of mouth sores.

You can candle the egg after 5 days to tell if it is fertile, I feed them 50% layer and 50% seed mix I don't feed scratch because the baby's don't grow good. Justin

Hey No limit, Chances are if they arent paired up it wont do you any good to candle the egg unless you plan on fostering it. Also Stay away from the scratch if at all possible. Any moisture and it will begin to mold which will make the birds ( old and young) very sick. Also due to the sharp edges on the crack corn I think it scars the throat which intensifies the chances of the young comming down with cancer. Good luck, Joe Urbon

Thank-you all. I won't feed scratch no more. I didn't know corn causes those illness! I'll wait 4 more days then i'll check out the egg by light. Thanks again.
