What's the next step in the development of your family? Do your birds have all the traits to be the ideal roller?

"What's the next step in the development of your family? Do your birds have all the traits to be the ideal roller?"

I have a few I consider satisfactorily my ideal, but those make me realize how good a bird can be which makes me raise the bar and expect them to be better in the long run. My "next step" is the same step I take every year--to breed sound young birds which develop in good team workers that roll well and frequently and are easily managed. Get 20 of those in a kit and you will see a nice show.

I think there is always room for improvment with any family of birds unless you`re easily pleased lol.Every year my goal is to breed slightly better birds than the year before. If i could breed a kit as good as the best bird in my loft i will be a happy man. I keep trying year after year its a very tough game roller flying is but thats what makes this great hobby worth while just by trying that little harder to reach my goal year after year. But i will find that pot of gold one day i hope.

For the first time in a few years I believe I have the stock to do what I really want to do as far as improving my birds. I am hoping to make my birds a little less fragile and increase the depth. That is my next step. I also may have two more birds that I can stock yet. Luckly on is a hen and the other is a............cock. Yelp, things are looking up.

I think you always have to be optimistic about your plans or just give it up.

Hi Tony:
I don't think I can get mine any better.I have at least 25 pair of top notch 25-40ft.Q.1.5 D1.6 hard spinning stock birds. My young birds come into the roll at 2-3 months and very few roll down.I can breed a competition kit of young birds every year. When I start the youngsters in May they will be going 25 -40 ft by the end of July.I usually start out with over 35 young the first nest, sometimes more. Some of my 40 ftrs.still take my breath away when I watch them.I havent been in competition in the last 10yrs or so and I think it kind of blunts your desire to breed better birds. The only thing I would want for my stock would be a little more frequency.I also have about 15 pair of my STARFIRE CRESTS besides these ones.I never let my stock birds out once they go into the stock loft=ever

Stan, I`m not sure how competition, BLUNTS, the desire to breed better birds, but if that is your feel for it, go with it . I guess the rest of us should just be happy we dont have to compete with your birds.... Mine have a long way to go and for me competing brings out a desire to do better. Actually losing a lot of flys makes me want to do better....LOL

I`ll keep on flying in comps. HEY Milo, how ya been !!! ! ! fly onnnnnnnnn ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

Stan, if your birds are that good and that consistant and easy to feed then we all need to kill our birds and come see you??? I have never seen a family that good.

Doing great butch...I guess I am a little tense cause I'm still on lockdown til probably Feb. I hate it really. Nothing worse than not being able to fly....But if I want a chance at the WC, I have to grin and bear it. Hope you are well.

well tony afetr a slow breeding season and a raptor filled summer I stocked the birds I wanted and locked down for the migration ready to try again in the spring. Early this week someone decided they needed my birds more than I did and cleaned me out !!! SOOOOO I will be starting from scratch which I havent done for a while so I will be relearning many heart aches of trying out new familys and strains to find one that fits with me. try an try agian they say. I say buy a couple more dogs. c.j.

im currently in the process of rebuilding as i orignally had rollers as foster birds for my blondinettes but then i got hooked on the rollers so the blondinettes have gone and its full steam ahead roller production at the moment i have bred 12 birds from good stock birds that i got from a good flyer in the area. but why is it so when you just start to get a great kit together every bloody bird of prey in the area takes a liking to them they never touched my other crap rollers.lol cheers trev
