Im just staring to lock up my pairs for the 2007 seasons. Just wondering what would be the best nesting material to use. I have always use tobacco stems, just wondering is ther anything else to use

I put sand on the bottom of the nestbowl, then a little pine woodchips, and throw some pine needles in the cage for the pair to do the finshing touches to the nest. They always say to me thank you thank you!!----------

I use the long pine needles...they build a sturdy nest with it and they seem to keep the bugs out..and they are softer then tobacco stems.

I was told to use unscented kitty litter. It has worked fine for me so far.

I have some in my yard--but If you dont have them(Which I am assuming you dont)-the next time you drive around look for pine trees with long needles in someone elses yard or property-then just stop and ask owner. They will more than likely be thrilled to have someone else rake them up.On the east coast the needles drop in late fall.I just rake them up from under one big tree(make sure they are dry) and put them in a black trash bag until I need them.Oh one more thing--Make sure If the people you get them from have not had their lawn sprayed under the tree--that--I dont belive would be good to add to your nest bowls.
