Being that it's winter is it safe to take the young ones from their parents at about 17-20 days. Will it be too cold or will the roller adjust to the winter old. Thankyou.

At around 14 days of age, pigeons will begin to generate their own body heat. I wouldn't worry so much about the heat, I'd make sure they know how to eat as they will need to eat A LOT.

Interesting! Do you agree it's okay to take them out as soon as they learn to eat?

If they are eating and drinking on their own, they will be fine. Of course it doesn't get sub zero temps where I live so I wouldn't know if that would be okay in those conditions. If they are eating and drinking on their own, they should be okay. I don't count days either. As soon as I have seen them on the floor of the loft eating on their own, they get moved to the kit box.

Freezing rain here Belle!
I have a pic somewhere of 9-10 squeaks on the floor in a corner of Squeekerland, the few days before going to the weaner pen. There was so much heat and humidity down under them, when I would reach in to grab a squeak my hand would be sweating in a matter of seconds. If you have more than one squeak, give em some cover to get away from the cocks and keep em tight together. They will be fine, and cozy in a group.
I opened my yb box late last night and shone a light in. There were three birds crammed into a corner between two perches.Even your kitbirds will huddle together when it gets really cold. As long as they are pretty much feathered out and eating well, as stated they will be fine. ---------- If they don`t kit, they don`t score. Color don`t roll and peds don`t fly. It`s a comp thing, understand?

I don't know if you guys have this problem but i have had 4 squabs freeze to death lately(hopefully no more or i'll have to stop breeding for a couple of months)They were around 2 weeks old and feathered out pretty good. The temps here are dipping in the low 40's at night.I'm pretty ticked off but what can you do it's mother nature.I have some more in the nests and hope they all make it.Keeping my fingers crossed!!
