Brian, Pretty impressive!I sure like the looks of your loft.I'm guessing this photo is your kitboxes.Could you show us some more pics of your setup?I like to see how the pros do it!Some day I'd like to build a larger loft so I can have more space to hang out with my birds. ---------- Kelly

Nice set up.Are you able to fly and maintain that many kits? How many pairs do you breed out of to be able to keep 6 kits going?

Close, it is 8x16, sort of a copy of Scotts kit box loft. This is just a kit box loft, everything self contained and easily managed. The breeders, etc are in the other lofts.
Luis, I have two more kit boxes for overflow/holding kits for a total of eight boxes. You can never have too many kit boxes. I'm down to four kits right now, but it will fill up in a few months. I usually breed from around 18 pairings give or take a few.

Brian, Yeah,,looks real nice.Definately one day I'll have a better setup. My kitboxes are separate 4X4X3 deep, standing on 4"X4" posts.Feeding on rainy days would be more comfortable at your place for sure! A few weeks ago we visited Neville Eccles,a roller-man,dairy farmer who lives outside Vancouver in Abbottsford,B.C. by the Fraser River. He's an Englishman and he brought with him the english style of building kitboxes. All inside like yours with individual traps, but when he releases the birds,he opens a big double door which takes up 1/2 of the front of the loft, then he opens the door of the kit he is gonna fly.Lots of room for them to get out freely, and the boxes are not darkened at all. Thanks, Kel.

Brian,
I had seen your kit box loft before but last time you posted a picture of it, you didn't have that "secondary" roof on top of the main roof. What is that exactly and why is it there? Just curious. Thanks! ---------- Darin Olson Checkerboard Lofts

Darin, I call that the "trampoline"...lol. I have a 12x24 shade cloth area over to the right of the kit box loft which was there long before the kit box loft was. It is a shade area for my other lofts. My kit birds used to land on it before going into the old kit boxes, mainly because it was higher I guess. I had noticed that several times when the kit was coming down to land, a stupid young bird would roll or something when landing and "bounce", then walk away fine. When I built the kit box loft the roof is huge and obviously hard. They started landing on it instead of the original "trampoline" by the lofts. Young birds always do stupid crap and some will get spooked when landing or fear takes over and they go into a spin and whack that roof hard. I had a real good prospect young bird last year that was coming nice that did one of those 10 foot last second rolls and jacked up its shoulder, never to fly right again. That pissed me off. Then a few months later I had a smokin recessive red I was elated about. When the kit was landing a freaking sparrow blasts through the birds when they were just about to land and this red hits a spin no more than five feet from the roof and was dead on impact. That was the last straw. So I built a trampoline over the roof solved that issue. Some of the hard heads give me shit about it, saying I will eventually breed unstable birds. I just laugh and tell them to breed their birds their way, I'll breed, fly and train mine my way. I let the score sheet do the talking. If they don't like it, the gate they walked through swings the other way..lol

Here's my short record:
'05 fall flay: DQed and a big 0 '06 WC final: 17th overall '06 California Fly: 2nd/3rd (still confused, lol, as I thought I was second but got a plaque that says 3rd and best bird) '06 Fall Fly final: 4th overall
Hope to add to this as I only started to raise rollers in '04 and '05 was my first year in competition.
