Since many of you say a crest is a cross, i have a question for you.
I have a bird out of my Norm Reed family, pure Reed, this bird and many of his offspring come out with a real small beak,I mean small.
To me it looks like a cross with a Parlor ,But since it came out of a reputable line, it' seems to be ok,the only reason i stocked this bird is it was a real good roller in many ways but the beak, just like i might stock a crest for the reason it rolls good.
How many of you bred a bird with a small beak?

I bred some shorties from a pair of birds that have Kumro in the background. It is my understanding that a lot of his birds had the shorter beak. But that could just be gossip.

And if they do have a short beak, are they crosses?

I don't believe so Hector, many if not most early tumbler breeds had shorter than what we consider normal beaks. It is most likely just a carry over from the past.

ey it might be a mutation, I mean crest and muffed rollers, I've seen a pair of crest rollers come from a pure pensom roller pair.

The beak has what to do with anything ? anything to justify mongrels uh Hector , inbreed the hell out of those color birds or one's with a crests and see what pops up , inbreed the Norm Reed birds and see what "doesn't" pop up , that is of coarse if thier gene pool hasn't been polluted after the fact.

Long beak , short beak, who care's it's genetic, if you you breed birds with short beaks you'll get short beaks. Keep fishing if it makes you feel better, and just keep breeding for the weird stuff and be on the road to nowhere.

Hector, I've tried mixing a parlor with a birmingham most of the babies were rolldowns or parlors, no matter how many generations I breed the babies back to the birmingham they always turned out to be rolldowns or parlors, I don't think short beaks are from parlors, maybe you are talking about budapest tumblers.

Hey Hector, I am not surprised, I will post some pictures of some Rubys with shorter beaks.

I have actually tried to get this trait when it showed up in one of my birds, they still have the roll and I do like the unique look it gives them.

If it is somewhere in the background (gene-pool), it can pop up, thing is, you have to recognize the trait and breed toward it through selection.

I think you are trying to build a strawman. Keep trying. LOL

PS: Kumro birds are way back in my familys background...

maybe what you guys are forgettin is that when you inbreed you have a greater chance of things from the past showing up,,,like they get racers with frills which is a reminder of the days of great crossings,,,

I recently saw some American Rollers that had a shorter than average beak.
