Yes, hens are better at laying eggs than are cocks however, Pensom advocated establishing a good family from an exceptional cock.
My family is based heavily on my 903 cockbird. I also used a bluebar cock from the same loft. ---------- FLY ON! Tony Chavarria

Not neccesarly cocks are better than hens , i guess it matters how tight your family gene pool is. I have had my percentage on both genders producing good bird in the loft and in the air, i have had just as many high velocity cocks in the air as i have had hens.I equate them both the same, hens and cocks, pending on the history of percentages. I don't think there is any difference in performance between the two sexes. You will generally find more hens in a competitors kit box (there are some exceptions of course, but generally speeking). Hens tend not to screw up as much as cocks. The cocks will sometimes become more occupied trying to make love that he doesn't take his rightful place on the team. Hens take care of business more often.
My opinion of couse and I reserve the right to change my mind.
Weird ain't it?

Good cocks can roll equel , but in many families (mine included) the percentages of good cocks is lower than hens. Cocks are just plain stronger by nature , which in turns gives many the mental and physical strength to resist the roll.

Of my familys currently,7 of 10 birds bred are cocks. So naturally I am heavy ended with better cocks than hens.I have 4 stockable cocks, after 2 years of flying them out.The hens that were hopeful, didn't make it back from overflys. So from that sense, and this is my experience only,my better spinning cocks are more likely the ones to make it back,if an overfly occurs. As far as cocks being able to resist the roll, because they are naturally stronger, thats not what I have seen from my stock. My better cocks are very even tempered and cool headed, as long as they are fed and housed accordingly....Aloha,Todd
