Question. when you have little stock and time of the year is a factor when do you band. Me, I have some Masons that I am working around. I also have some Mason/Turner birds. I took a few hits in 03, 04, 05, 06. Yep, trees, hawks, snakes, squirrel piss, and birds shooting out of the loft into the horizon have all kept me down in numbers. The birds I do have left I am truly sticking with due to the fact of only the stronest, smartest, and best spinning birds in my loft are left. Nature and by my own selection at at it's finest here in my backyard. Anywho, I have squabs in the nest on 31 December that I am going to band as 07 birds due to the fact that they will be around 10-12 days old. If they hatch in Dec 06, would you say they are 06 birds. What is your take on breeding and time to band/what year to band? Small numbers and small percentage of keepers have me breeding just to try and get a kit of 21 flyers not including 4 pair I am going to breed out for 07. My loft management is getting pretty good but keeping birds in the air have me letting my breed 24/7.

Technically they are 06 but in all reality they are 07`s. Go for the 07

If they don`t kit,they don`t score.
Color don`t roll and peds don`t fly.
It`s a comp thing,understand?

For me, I have several birds setting, the hatch is anytime, but will now not happen till 07. They will be 07 birds, even though I have some 06 bands. (Now throw aways)

Birds born in 06 are 06 birds. There would be no advantage to band them as anything else. Unless you do not have 06 bands then 07 bands would be suitable. Better than no bands at all.

I always band any of my rollers that need banded the last part of December with the new years bands.I just banded 38 this week with 07 bands.I put the pairs together the week of Thanksgiving and by this time I am out of bands so when the young are ready I just use the new bands.David

David,

I understand that. There is no aurgument here. There simply is no advantage for the performing birds; just get a band on 'em for ID purposes.

A few day's or weeks will not effect the birds true outcome, as long as you keep accurate records.

A 06 is a 06 and a 07 is a 07

07 bands should not be passed out till 07

Jerry
