You are going to traumatize your birds. It is imperative you use the correct year when banding. They will develop a complex being older than their kitbox counterparts, and develop feelings of inadequacy.

Yes the birds look good but you cannot in good faith fly any of them in competition as a young bird kit in 2007. If you fly just for your own pleasure, great, and looks like you have done well. good luck.

I'm wondering, how do you get 07 bands in December of 06? I thought all 07 bands weren't mailed out until January. Somebody clue me in.

Yeah in England bands or rings as we call um are only issued on the 1st of jan If you are flying in young bird comps don't that make you have a advantage by 1 month if you are banding in dec and 4 weeks is a big difference when flying young birds in comps. W@YNE UK

As long as everyone is getting there rings at the same time i dont see a issue here infact it would be better for everyone as you would have more mature youngsters to watch at the young bird fly. Steve
p.s you wanna get some kind of nest material in them bowls.

Absolutely, Wayne. I received my rings from George Frost 3rd January - I thought they'd got lost. The All England Roller Club certainly plays it straight!

you totally missed the point boys would be in everyones interest to fly more mature youngsters and it would create more interest in young bird compition.

I get your drift Steve but where would you stop, Nov?
I think 1st Jan makes it clear and fair for everyone. Just wish there was a club and someone to compete with up here.

Here in the U.S I can have my bands made for 2008 now if I would want to. I don't know of any rules that says the birds have to be a certain age to fly in competition.maybe you all have something different in other countries? David

David, in the UK, there's a yearling comp which I don't think you in the US have. Perhaps other countries have this also. You will see the need to specifically identify the year of a roller for comps like this. But, what about young bird comps for current year rollers? Surely, the correct year's band has to be displayed.

David Over here in England in all of England fly`s we fly
Young bird. Yearling.
Old bird.
Before every fly it is the judges responsibility to check rings and years at random on birds flying in comps. Can you imagine the cheating that would go on if we could get our rings made with the years on request. ie old birds flying as yearlings yearlings flying young birds people having big advantage with age differences of pigeons flying in these comps.Thats why the All of England only issue rings from jan 1st, Hope you know where i am coming from David. regards W@yne uk

Evidently the difference is we don't fly y.b or yearling comp. here in the USA. I had no idea that you could get bands earlier then Jan.1. I know with homer it's Jan 1st because of yb compition in the fall. Seem crazy to me to have 07 band on a bird hatched (Not born!) in 06, but like you said, they are your birds.

David, you are correct in that there is no stipulation that I am aware of that mandates that a kit bird in a competition kit must have a band on it. The age of the bird is not a defining issue. I understand the importance of proper banding as Wayne and Steve have eluded to for the UK. We have the same mandates for our show breeds here and the bands are not put into the mail until the day after Christmas so that everyone should get them around the first of the January.
Here in the US, there is nothing that says what age birds we can fly in the organized flys. So what age the bird is doesn't matter. I consider a young bird to be a bird basically less than one year of age, regardless of the band year. I will often use left over previous year's bands when I run out of the current year bands, does that make the young bird now an old bird because it wears a band from a previous year..lol. Of course in the UK I can understand the importance of going by the rules. We just don't have those rules here so the opinions will vary. Brian.

I also agree with properly banding young if you have young bird comps. When i competed Sporting Pouters we also had a young bird comp and certainly we never recieved our bands before the year rolled in,hell sometimes we did not get them till feb,but as we don't have those regulations here w/ rollers i don't see the harm.If we ever go to a young bird comp i'm sure all clubs would abide by the rules.
As far as where i draw the line only birds hatched in dec get the new years bands.
