I have a breeder hen who has gone "light". Very lathargic and has lost a great deal of weight. She and her mate have newly hatched squabs.

I know we have discuss this before, but could someone walk me through some recommended treatments?

It is rare for me to have sick birds and I haven't been paying attention to the discussions about illnesses.

hey Nick, I would start with a 3 or 4 in 1 med for the pair of them. Are they separated from other birds?

Plenty of grit available. She is not eating or drinking. I forced her to take on fluid. She is lathargic. Does not venture away from nest box. Her mate is un-effected. No other birds in open loft is showing signs of being effected. No mice or signs of mice.

Nick,
Salmonella (paratyphoid) can stay hidden until the birds are stressed (breeding) and then rears its ugly head. Did you vaccinate for paratyphoid? That would be my first guess because it is so common.

She kept the water down; I did not vaccinate. I am going to attempt fostering her young out and de-stressing her in seclussion for about 72 hours. Hand feed her as well.

Need to know what a biscut would be in the U.S.(LOL) I watch "Keeping Up Appearences" and I never understood what ol' Hyacinth is giving her neighbor when offering a "biscut". I am assuming it is a cookie(LOL).

Hey Nick,

Do have any Baytril on hand? If you do place a couple of drops down her throat and she should show signs of getting better within hours. This for me usually gets them up and starts them to eating on their own. This gives for time to find the problem and try an fix it.If you the baytril don't give them any other medication until the next day because it will kill them.

Hope this helps

Amoxicillin is safe to use when breeding. I would use it for 10 days if you are treating for paratyphoid.
What other symptoms does she have?

She takes on a stance as if egging, but there is no egg. Tail down; back humped. Throat is clear; vent is clean; eyes normal; no nasal secreations.

If I were a betting man, I'd say it is either e-coli based or possibly cocci. Depends on what her droppings look like. I've had this happen to some hens over the years, usually during their first round of youngsters. Heavy dosages of amoxicillin would be a safe treatment. Amprolium or Baytril would be a good choice too. I've only managed to save a few hens that were caught at this late in the illness. Most eventually just didn't improve and dwindled away to nothing. Break her up from the mate and isolate her where it is warm. If it were me, I'd hit her with the baytril tablets.

Hey Stan.I thought I was the only one who still believed in pulling their tail feathers.LOL.
With the Cod Liver Oil I just use a syringe without the needle and shoot some down the throat. The Capsules I get are to big I think. They even choke me. David
