hello
I have encountered a problem I have never seen before. I reaquired a bird that I raised this week and when I check her over she had a swollen look below her eye and some puss in the feathers. I assumed a eye cold and treated it as such. when in 4 days it didnt show any signs of clearing I got a wet rag and sat down to have alook after cleaning it all up It seems that the fluid is comeing from the ear and just clotting the fethers below the eye. She was given to a local guy so she hasnt had any climatic changes. her loft however was a little less than ideal a small steel shed with an open wire side and dirt floor. any ideas c.j.

CJ, I don't want to get into your business, but how could you lend a bird to someone with a loft like that!! Most likely that loft is not vermin or mosquitoes free!! Dirt floor always holds moisture and with moisture desease always sets in. I would not take a bird back if I loned it to anybody with a loft is not equal or better (cleaner)than mine, that if I lend it in the first place. The last thing I would want is to contaminate my birds with crap from other lofts. To me, with all due respect, is carelessness and with that it could cost you all your birds. That's just me...and I try to avoid sickness in my loft at any cost...even if my friend is going to get mad at me for not lending him the bird. He will get over it.

The bird in question was given along with 3 others to a young fellow ( 7 years old ) who came with his father to see the birds fly. A first time experiance for both. They assured me that they had an adequet loft. As for loseing all my birds No worries. I had all my birds stolen last month and am scrapeing the dirt to recover some of my blood line. I am amazed at the number of people who I have given birds to that suddenly cant spare a young bird or the origionals to let me restock my loft. So when I called and the guy said that the others had died and she was left I ran over to get her and find out why the others died. when I saw the loft I was very dissapointed. I guess in the future I will have to screen those who wish to get rollers. c.j.
