While feeding this morning 2 of my kit birds flew out. I left them out, went and fed horses, and when I came back noticed they were still out. While in the breeder pen I heard a "thomp" and looked out the door and this hen had rolled down. She has never done this, and is now bleeding from her mouth and her right eye is full of blood. any advise. quick? Thanks, Jerry

Jerry , just put her somewhere safe, not much you can do, she'll either make it or die. I have had birds that I was sure that they would die, only to bounce back , others aren't so lucky , but to be honest she doesn't look good.

Pigeons are pretty tough. I too have been surprised a time or two. Have one in right now that dislocated his leg at the "hip" A week ago. He is hobbling on it now. I just put him in an extra indie pen in the breeder loft and made sure he could reach his feed and water. Good luck ---------- If they don`t kit, they don`t score. Color don`t roll and peds don`t fly. thanks guys. I placed her back into the kit box. She flew up to her perch and appears to be doing ok. Her eye is blood clotted over, but the bleeding from the mouth appears to have stopped. I attempted to remove the blood from the eye but feared I was doing more harm than good. Just hate to lose this one as she is what I have strived to breed the past few years. Hopefully she can fly blind in one eye if she makes it. Jerry

She seems to be alert. This is a positive sign. Keep her quiet(isolated) with fresh water and some food and give her some time to ease back.
You might want to play some good blues music.....etta james maybe; the women love "At Last".

LOL... That is actually all ice from a storm that started last night around 9 and is supposed to get worse thru sunday evening. We lost power last night a few hours, but have some a few miles down the road that are still in the dark. Powerlines down everywhere. Neighbor works for electric company so they usually get ours fixed quick as he and 2 other electric workers are on the same line as we are.. Cold tho, with the lows dipping down to 6 tonight. ---------- Eat, sleep, Cowboys, Pigeons... The facts of life

if she is getting better than that is a good sign, usually rolldowns will die after looking like that for a day, she'll get better, I believe she can still see, maybe the blood just went to her eyes from hitting or rolling too fast, I've had about 90 percent of the birds that had hit survive the first day of being in the injured state and 10 percent of the rest die off after the first week. Just thank god when you found her she wasn't in a state where she looked like she was having an asthma attack.

Well, we have had a serious storm move in and 90% are without power. I went to my house today to feed and the hen was still alert and eating/drinking well. Her eye appears to be closed shut. Will this prevent her from flying as it could mess with her balance? Jerry ---------- Eat, sleep, Cowboys, Pigeons... The facts of life

Sounds like the bird will be fine. Put some antibiotic ointment on the eye and it will open in a day or two. I wouldn't fly her again for several weeks, even if the eye looks like it is okay.

Thanks Brian, at this point with her being flown out last year, and being a well rounded bird, would it be advisable to stock her at this point, or try and put her back in the air? Jerry ---------- Eat, sleep, Cowboys, Pigeons... The facts of life

Jerry, Don't fly her, its time to try her out in the stock pen.My deepest roller" BIGFOOT",A 60 TO 80 foot roller hit the ground one day didn't come back till 11 months later, missing an eye.He produced,my best hen on the property, she's on my A-team.I would like to try her back on "BIGFOOT" someday...Aloha,Todd

Jerry that is purely up to you whether or not to give her a try at breeding. Sometimes birds make a mistake now and then and recover fine from such an injury. Some will act different afterwards. You won't know unless you fly her. She won't be in the breeding mood for a while.
