Hi, my name is Lisa and I just bought some Roller Pigeons. First of all let me say that all I know about pigeons can fit under one fingernail. I have done a lot of research about pigeons over the past few days, and have learned a lot about their care and feeding. But I have some questions. *Are all Roller pigeons Birmingham Roller's? *Do the birds have to be banded? *If my birds are not banded(they are not) is it ok for me to band my babies? *I have not been able to find any clubs in my state (WV), anybody know anyone close to me? *Is there a market for Roller's? I bought 100 Birds. Thank you so much for answering these questions, and if there are any helpful web sites for novices, I would appreciate all info.

Lisa,
Were all newbies sometime, your coming into the hobby at a great time, and you have found a place and the people to answer any and all questions with serveral ideas. Ok
*Are all Roller pigeons Birmingham Roller's? NO Some are homers, some are show rollers, ect.....
*Do the birds have to be banded? NO but its a good idea to band them and track them for keeping records on there young and HOW THEY ROLL!
*If my birds are not banded(they are not) is it ok for me to band my babies? YES This is make them lots easer to keep track of.
*I have not been able to find any clubs in my state (WV), anybody know anyone close to me? Someone else will have to help you there....
*Is there a market for Roller's? I bought 100 Birds. Yes and No. Must people that get top $$ have had birds for years and developed some great rollers, people like to buy from a good bloodline and a bird that rolls and rolls deep but does NOT hit the ground or objects like roofs and trees. (WOW 100 birds is quite a few to start with, do you know there bloodlines??)
I can not answer everything, I feel an still learning all the time. But I have found that this is the place to ask questions and form your own opinion.
I would try to give you names but there are sooo many here that KNOW, and willing to share their knowledge.

Lisa, Glad you can join the croud. 1. Not all rollers are Birmingham because they might be another performance breed.{oriental rollers} 2. Birds dont have to be banded but your records would be hard to keep. 3. Yes if you band the babies you can keep records a little easier from that day forward. 4. Where are ya at in W.Va. I'm in the southern part of Ohio. 5. Market as selling rollers? No. for eating them or selling them to a market? no there to small. For selling them on a auction block? Probably not unless your willing to take a few dollars apiece for them.
If you like to ask me any other questions please get a hold of me at: Brian Middaugh @ rollerpigeon@roadrunner.com website: http://rollerpigeon1963.tripod.com

EAT PIGEONS, please tell me that is a joke!!! No, I meant, that since I have so many, and if they breed as fast as I have been reading that they do, what will I do with all of these birds. All I know is the man had "Roller" pigeons, was selling out his last years birds and I bought them. Did not even know that pigeons came with a pedigree until I started looking them up online. I am just outside of Huntington, WV, about nine miles, I have 100 acres and just built a 38 ft loft on the side of my barn.

Hello Lisa, I'm fairly new to rollers myself but I've raised pigeons for many many years. 100 sounds like a lot of birds but when you start flying them you will lose some. Some will just fly away and pray a hawk don't find you and your birds. If a hawk starts getting your birds and everytime you fly them you will probably lose one everytime you fly them. So if you fly much your flock could start disappearing pretty quick. Is there woods around your loft? If so, you will have to be real careful. Regards, Frankie

I have eaten some kind of pigeon for 50 plus years. Doves; common pigeons; squab in the finest of resturants; rollers; kings (my favorite); homers; nuns; and many others. So, it is not a joke.
Welcome to the hobby and welcome to this site. You will enjoy the experience and you will have a lot of fun and joy.
Was the person you bought the rollers from a man named Cameron?
Good luck

Lisa first thing you need to do once the birds is to start flying them to see which are good and which aren't. With you having a 100 birds you need to be strict with your culling. I will gaurantee you that not every bird you purchased will be a top roller, especially if none of them are banded start with any thing that doesn't roll culling it. When you cull there are tons of ways to do it. Some of them aren't so pleasant like putting the bird "down". Or you can send them to your local livestock market. Or place an article in your local paper that you have culls for sale. Or yes you can even eat them. They are supposed to be quite good. I hope this helps. C.J.

Lisa, I live within 45 minutes of Huntington W.Va. There use to be plenty of roller guys up that way but I only know of a few that live between us {I live Sciotoville/Minford Ohio area} There was George Abner and Andy Johnson both in Ohio a little off of route 52. I haven't seen these fellas in a long time. Andy would come down from time to time and George was a trucker and his schedlue was always different. But there is a few guys that still fly down this way. John Bender, Steve Sissle, Myself and a few new guys like oldfart who I need to get up with. I was just called to the powerhouse down on the river to work 7 days a week and 12 hours a day. Really takes away your play time. But don't try and fly those new birds of yours right now for two reasons. One they haven't been settled at your place yet. What I mean they don't know that your place is home. And it takes a good while for them to get settled in. If not you will loose most of them because they are going to go look for home once they are loose. And another reason you don't want to fly right now is because the hawks are really bad right now at this time of year. You will have them scattered everywhere and loose more than you care to. Now if you want to ask me more about this I would be more than happy to help you out. You can post them here and get a variety of replies or you can email me privately. Thanks and best of luck Brian Middaugh rollerpigeon@roadrunner.com

I really appreciate your helpful responses to my questions, they have given me much to think about. The birds have not been delivered to me yet, as I had to get a loft built. After much consideration, I have decided not to go through with my purchase. The gentleman gave me a week to change my mind. I think there are too many birds for one thing, I know absolutely nothing about flying, I live in the country and loose chickens and ducks to hawks every year, and there is just no way in this world that I could EVER cull birds or any other animal. I am the one who takes in the strays that nobody else wants and feed all the dogs in the neighborhood, so that is just not something that I can see myself being capable of. I have a very nice loft for my chickens and ducks though, lol. Again, thank you so much, and God Bless each of you.

Lisa, give it a try, they are wonderful creatures! As a child, I raised several breeds of pigeons, nothing compared to my rollers! I new nothing of competition and it didn't matter. Once you have your birds for awhile, you will start seeing personalities in your birds, they will vary like people. I suggest get advice on settling you birds, hopefully you can seperate your birds into groups, once you start flying them, pick from the best to breed from. Please don't cross breeds just for color, don't pass on birds that aren' any good, don't breed birds that arnt any good, unless you learn to cull, they multiply like rabbits! I have a few birds that arent very good but they just seem to work harder at being good parents and have them personalities that you just enjoy having around,I keep them around for foster parents. Find good people in your area, I would start with Brian Middaugh (good man) and let them help you! The forums will be more help than you can imagine! Don't hesitate to ask questions, some answers won't be sugar-coated, but most people mean well! Trust in God and your common sense and just enjoy your birds for awhile, then you can decide which direction is best for you! Good luk and God bless! Val

Her email is kris@kabstudio.com Hang in there though, I had a rough start at first too, but I'm glad I hung around! These guys will grow on you, and Tony, the owner of this forum will bend over backwards to help you! Hi Lisa,
I'm Vu.... anyways for a little of help and info, i just recently started back into raising roller pigeons... i now have about 25 or 26 rollers right now... and it gets pretty tough... im pretty shure it is really tough with 100 rollers.... to keep this short i have to say that most people on this site are good people or suppose to be good people... anyways i think that its best if you join some club and or ask people online whom are in clubbs of raising roller pigeons... they're great people and will help you out. one thing you do wanna watch out for are thives and worse are hawks and falcons....
