I don't even post very often but was reading posts this morning and was struck very wrong by a post from nicksisders. A lady just starting in pigeons ,a real novice because she stated she even had to look up feeding and care, was asking a question an another thread and it was brought up about eating pigeons and he posts with a list of the types and which is his favorite. How can someoone who gets bent out of shape over gamecocks post something like this when the lady didn't sound very cool with that idea i don't believe that that is the way to welcome a newcomer. lets keep people around not scare them away

I am not quite sure what you are so bent out of shape about. What he stated was the truth and I quote " I have eaten some kind of pigeon for 50 plus years. Doves; common pigeons; squab in the finest of resturants; rollers; kings (my favorite); homers; nuns; and many others. So, it is not a joke. What part of this do you take offence to? I imagine he probably enjoys a good steak or pork chop from time to time as well. He may even eat chicken.Whether or not the lady was cool about it or not it happens, and yes I am told it is quite good. nicksiders was not rude or direspectful just stating his opinion. I could see it being offensive if he went into great details of how they do it or how others destroy there birds. Come on get off your high horse and stop looking for something to complain about. There was no wrong doing here. C.J.

I agree with CJ.No rudeness on that post of Nick's.It's called Animal Husbandry and it is part of reality. If our new freind Lisa can't handle it,selling the farm may be an out.JMHO. ---------- Kelly

smk,
I went back and added some remarks to the post so I did not sound so obtuse......it was not a very good welcoming post and I needed to correct it.
Thank you,

I appreciate your attempt at making me feel welcome. I personally did not find Nick's post rude, just short and to the point. Maybe just a little unfriendly. I did however find Santandercol's post extremely rude. Selling the farm will not be necessary, thanks for the input. Just a little shocked that people would eat something so small and fragile looking.

Well I better put my 2cents in here to. Eating pigion is a way of life, I don't eat them, but my dad did when he lived at home during the Depression. Says to me they were good. Nick and Santandercol are both a great pair of guys. As ol day says SOMETIMES THE TRUTH HURTS. I think this a case of it. No one ment to insult anyone, just telling it the way it is.

Hmmm, to small to eat? What about the doves, quail, cornish game hens and other small "pigeon" sized birds that have been a mainstay on family dinner tables for many moons? I personally dont eat them but do give the culls to a friend who does and he has good things to say. In my own opinion I could care less if you eat them or not. That doesnt make you more or lesser of a person, but there are alot that do eat them, along with other small birds.

At no point did I ever say that a person was more or less anything for eating pigeons !!! You can eat their waste for all I care. I was simply surprised that people in this country do it. I personally have never looked at a pigeon and thought wow, I'll bet that is good eating. So What. Some of you need to cut a little slack for people who don't know everything about everything. Now, for the record, when I asked about a market for the birds, it had not occured to me that people eat them, please excuse me for being surprised. I would be willing to bet you don't get a lot of new members that stick around this place for long.

Hey Lisa, The word "market" has a wide variety of definitions and for myself when you used the word market I thought you were referring to either selling them for money or for food. Most of the people on this forum would rather help a newbie out by "giving" them birds to start out than by selling them. As far as for food, it would surprise you what some would eat rather than waste it. We that are serious about raising a great family of pigeons have no choice but to cull by means other than hawk attacks, over flys, etc. That is just a way of life for most of us. So after the culling proces is over, it comes down to what do you do with the culled birds. For some, the answer is to eat them. As far as newbies sticking around, that is a choice that you or they need to make. This is one of, if not the best pigeon forums on the net. If someone is wanting to learn, or has info to share, this is the place to come. Hope you dont take offense to some of the remarks, as most are just opinions and nothing more, but if you arent tough enough to stick around, then maybe I will see ya on the flip side! Jerry

Upon a dare, I ate some canned bees. They looked like raisans and were, I guess, young bees harvested from the hives so they were laden with honey and actually weren't too bad tasting. My excuse for taking the dare was being young and seeking to impress my peers...lol

On my regular trips to France, I now have my son and daughter really liking snails - and yet the picky buggers won't eat your everyday English fayre. Snails are not so much a delicacy as a way of life, for the French. They're not the everyday snails you squish underfoot, because these things are properly farmed supersnots. Of course, without lashings of garlic butter, French bread and a litre of red wine, you'd probably gag.

Like eating carp. You put the fish (carp) on a board; add butter; garlic; diced onions; chopped tomatos; fresh ground black pepper; smidgion of salt; bake for 20 minutes; throw away the carp and eat the board.

Hello to Lisa... I just caught this thread... hey, that's OK that you didn't know that people in the US eat pigeons. There were once huge commercial squab-producing farms (the largest ones in California, and in the Carolinas... I think this is right) that shipped the delicacy by the thousands of pounds all over the US to restaurants and markets. I don't think many people know about this anymore. I think in general, the days of squab being a popular meat in our country has passed (but pigeon folks still eat em'!)... sort of like how lamb hasn't been very popular here since WWII, but that's making somewhat of a comeback.
They probably taste pretty good, though. Maybe like squirrel? Turkey?? I like squirrel pie, but haven't had it in a long time. I raise some sheep for wool; but I also eat lamb (you just can't keep all those extra ram lambs!)
I haven't posted here before, but someone let me know you were new on here... I have some rollers and I'm looking forward to some fun; also looking to talk to another lady who likes the roller hobby!! LOL!! (not too many out there). I'm new to pigeons too (but not new to livestock in general), and so far, so good... the birds are doing great! I sure hope you decide to keep the rollers. You can email me anytime... we can talk about animals and pigeons!

There is also another lady that visits the live chat here that goes by the name "squeeker". Her name is Jenene and she lives in Utah. I have two grown daughters, but they have never showed a lot of interest thus far.
It would be nice to have more women in the hobby.
Kristen wants an email relationship with you to guide you to another site which will be your choice. She believes this site is a tough crowd, but if you examine it closer you will find this site to be the one that will give you sound advise and solid direction. The members in here are exceptionally knowledgeable and are a group of exceptionally good people.

I think all the guys on here are very knowledgeable. I don't doubt it in the least. I have read a lot on this board since late summer/early fall of last year (to learn stuff). But IMHO, yes, a tough crowd, nonetheless. But you know what they say; if you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen! LOL!! (and I don't mean this to be translated as "if you can't stand the heat, get out, the hobby doesn't want ya." Not too nice. I think there are many ways to enjoy it anyway.)
I personally do like another forum; it's just what I'm most comfortable with, and I'm OK with that. Everyone can come and go as they wish on the internet... folks can go wherever suits them best... Lisa can decide whatever she likes.
I wish there were more women in the hobby. I would just like to talk with some of them too, that's all.
See ya later... Kris

I think you are better suited for this forum right here. I won't go into my reasoning for it, but your last post makes it obvious that you are a "tough crowd" yourself(LOL). You need to stick around and stick it to some of us...LOL
