I was just setting in my chair and my mind was just bouncing around the walls of nonsence. The terminology blurb of "spread brown qualmond grizzle" shot abruptly across my depraved mind. Then I wondered how many breeders of rollers would honestly recognize that term as an understandable terminology to describe a roller. I wonder who invented the word "qualmond"......what does it mean? What would you have to do to the BR to get a qualmond? Why would you want to do that to the BR? All of these things trickled down thru my mind....like Ronnie Reagan's economic strategy.........

Then a sudden wrap on the door startled me into a conscience state. I arose from my chair and quickly went to the door and upon opening it I discovered no one there. Looking slowly down I discovered a freshly deposited mound of crap with the word "qualmond" written upon and in it. It might have been bull dung, but not knowing how I would recognize it not being cow dung I did not venture to taste it.

From this sign given me by some unknown source I was releaved to know that it really doesn't apply to my beloved Birmingham Rollers and that I need not know what a qualmond is......I was so releaved. I returned to my chair, took a sobering sip from my hazelnut flavored coffee and begin to contemplate less stressful things.

Weird ain't it?

Nick, are you saying that you enjoy mongrelized coffee? LOL
I wonder what Juan Valdez would think if he knew what you are doing to the pure Colombian commodity. But who cares, you bought it with your own money and are consuming it for your own enjoyment, right?

I'm starting to understand you now. Don't waste your time on ideas like the "hole" or the "blur." Qualmonds make for much more interesting reading. LOL

Russ,

You are the only one who caught the hazelnut flavoring thing. If anybody did I thought it would be you or that old fart David Strait.

great line of err uhm thought???? LOL IN my turner family I bred and coveted my qualmonds because I knew I could use them to heat up any of the other birds. From the hazy webs of my memory the qualmond was discovered in england ( theres a good start huh ) by a guy who last name started with qual or some such. comp quality ?? no way but very hot and worked well with some of my tight fast birds that didnt have the frequency I was looking for. Keep in mind I was building a family that I was comfortable putting into the comps so birds like that were very useful. c.j.

LOL Nick, myself I'm a straight up French Roast man , even though I have no respect for them.

C.J. why would you want to breed unstable birds to stiffs or vice versa ?

You're right. I do like to stir it up now and then. I think it knocks the mud off the tires(tyres for the guys in the UK) so people can get a good grip on something and drive it around for awhile. Some people get pissed, but they will comment for sure then we can get an interesting parlee going.

I enjoy people saying how they really feel; even if it pisses me off as well. The mud falls away for good traction. We all pick up a lot of mud sometimes.

Nick,
I happen to disagree with your theory about helping folks by stirring up the pot. A little encouragement goes a long way I believe and sitting around thinking of some way to cause a stir does very little if anything to help anyone. There is enough difference of opinion around that gets brought up on it's own to be discussed without doing it on purpose. Qualifier: Of course that is just my opinion,,, I could be wrong.

spread brown qualmond grizzle

Nick I could reasonably identify it if I saw it. It actually isn't that difficult of a combination to decern once you understand the expressions of the vast myriad of pigeon genetics. New mutations seem to be constantly being discovered. My understanding via genetic literature is that Qualmond was named by Joe Quinn who added the Q of his last name when he discovered it and through breeding experiments proved its connection as an allele to the almond gene.
You should subscribe to the pigeon genetics yahoo group for nothing more than to fill a void in your time with learning about the genetic possibilities in pigeons. Most or none may apply directly to the rollers you raise, but it will give you a better understanding and increase your knowledge of pigeon genetics overall.
Brian.

I happen to like my qualmonds just fine and hope to get good spinning birds out of them. It's o.k to think outside the box and not just go w/the flow without putting it to the test first.I have a lot of respect for the rollermen on this site but when we close our minds this way it shows a bit of ignorance.

Does a birds color dictate what kind of performer it will be?Most certainly not!!If you choose to have only a particular color in your loft, that's only preference. That does not mean that other peoples colored birds are shit!!

Kowalski wrote "When more fanciers understand that the propensity to roll is a mental phenomenon, and delivery of the roll is governed by the birds body and feather structure. We will see a greater number of exellent performers(even in exotic colors)"I agree w/this man 100 percent!!

Brian,

Thank you. I felt it did have something to do with the almond factor, but I could not find a historical note in the references I had at home and I was too lazy to look for it on the internet. I have never dabbled with the color stuff as you know nor do I have a mind to. I just don't understand why breeders do it, but I have came to realize to each his own. It is almost like a belief system that I have as well as those who prefer to dabble in the color.............so, I have learned to walk away from the debates about color. Kinda like dusting off your feet and quickly departing kinda thing for me.

A made up name from a color project......gesh. Well, shut my mouth.

luis,

I think breeding all that color jazz is the "going with the flow" approach. I also believe ignorance can be fixed.

You do what works for you. I also do quite a bit of that very same thing you would like to see. Not all of my posts are cute little dribbles of crap. When someone seeks help I do what I can.

thanks brian I was sort of close LOL. scott When building a group of birds from hobbiest stature to comp ready birds many things need tweaked, fixed or breed out. I choose to take one family and see what could be done. I had origonaly purchased the family because they were not comp type but as the itch grew again I decided that I would like to take what I had and mold it the way I needed. All the parts were there and I had culled and breed down two seperate lines one being still very hot and as the roll tightened up and the kits looked like what I wanted I saw my birds going stiff. Since I had no pure br / pensom /514 peds to lean on ( just kidding guys) I had to use something to put the roll back in. The qualmonds in my family did the job. I selected some that possessed many of the traits I was looking for which included decent kitting ( which in itself discounts unstability and also cut the hotest of the birds). My program worked rather well and I was happy with the results I was getting. I almost forgot the main reason they were here the boss ( aka my lovely wife) likes the multitude of colors and patterns that come from the qualmond color. I enjoy working with a group of birds and seeing the progress. It has been my experiance that it is more effective to breed a little hot and work back than to try and ease stiffs into the roll. c.j.

Nick, Your point there was taken, I have seen useful and helpful posts from you in the past. I am hoping you got at least a little of the point I was trying to make. If so then good deal, if not then I figure nothing ventured, nothing gained. I don't figure anyone is gonna get slung off the world cause it stopped turning.
Adios for now amigo,
Jim
