Has anyone ever kept track of how many unfertile eggs a year that they have? If so what percent have you had? I bring this up because out of my 6 pair, I had 3 unfertile eggs, and not sure if that is in the normal range, or if I need to do something about it..Thanks, Jerry

Best advice is to just leave them be. The cock birds typically aren't as fertile during the winter months, their testes are severely shrunk as compared to the higher hormone warmer months. I get a ton of infertile eggs if you combine all of my pigeon breeds. My rollers are my most prolific, but there are pairs that just don't hit for a few rounds. When it warms up you will see those infertile numbers greatly dimenish.

Along the same lines I have a hen that has one infertile egg first round regardless of which cock I put her with.
After that no problems for the rest of the season.

I only had one or two out of 70 last season. I think they were hens who hadn`t bred in a while, just need a warm up. So far so good here. I hit 100% fert`s on the first round of eggs. The ones that are getting close to hatching are darkening up and looking nicely done.

Ususally don`t handle the eggs to much after about 12 -14 days. Skeered to. I just lift the bird sitting and look at the eggs. Look for the little pip in the egg to signal an incoming chick.

Its really kinda neat when the little guy hatches. Usually takes 18-24 hours for him to peck all the way around the egg and push the ends apart. What I want to know is how he stacks the halves of the shells together. Numerous times I have lifted a hen, checking on the eggs, to find the halves of the shell stack neatly cup fashion off to the side of the hens skirt.

LOL V,
upon checking eggs this morning I had 3 that had a hole pecked thru their eggs..I have often thought the same thing, how do those egg shells end up that way....
Also, this morning I had a day old hatch on the floor. Now from where this chick came from is almost impossible to get out of the nest. The nest itself has 3 inch sides, and is in the corner of their box..Kinda surprised me..guess he was the ugly duckling and momma didnt want him in there...Jerry
