In an article "The Authentic Birmingham Roller Pigeon" written by William McRae and appeard in the Dec. 1974 issue of the APJ, it states that:

A second class roller, usuing a camera with the capabilities of shooting 36 frames in one second, rolled 27 times in a single second of drop. It then stated that with the same camera another high-class Pensom roller executed between 40 and 50 rolls per second of drop....

With that being said, would it be possible that the 2nd class roller is one that lives in most lofts?

I for one never thought that a roller, no matter what the "breed" of roller, could possibly roll 27 times per second, let alone 40 or 50..Guess it goes to show that there is a difference between rollers. With a bird rolling 2 to 3 seconds, that is some serious spin. Heck, I get dizzy just going on a roller coaster ride!..Jerry

Jerry

Yes, and I have some of them in my loft. If everyone is honest they would say that they all do on any given day.

Video with modern equipment of fast rollers over the past decade has concluded that the fastest ones roll 12-14 rps, not 40.

Hey Jerry,

I for one would like to see the video. At 40 rolls per second that translates to 2400 RPM at which is 70 mph cruising speed for my 3/4 ton pickup :) sure seems awful generous to think a poor little bird that small could do that. My bet is that if one really did spin 40 times in one second he would loose every feather in the process.

Matter o'fact this intrigued me so much I went and found some info. If they spun that quickly I think we would call them Humming Pigeons instead. Humming birds flap their wings about 50 time per second per this website. That's what make them hum.

http://www.hummingbirdworld.com/h/behavior.htm

Seems to be about what some other sites agreed with. That said, I have now found the name for our loft. "Humming Lofts"

I would think that 10 - 12 spins in a second would be really really quick. Wish I could spin that quick....
