This is my first time on the forum so I apologize if this subject was covered before. A topic that interests me is the figure 8 fly pattern in rollers. Heine Bjiker spoke in 2002 about american birds lacking the figure 8 pattern needed for bigger breaks. He spoke that many kits flew to fast and didn't work together. I for one appreciated his candor on the matter. I'm sure he was just making a general observation about some kits in the States, not all. He may have changed his beliefs since then, I don't know. I'm curious if people on the forum generally believe in this statement about american birds, and why this perception exists. I definitely have my theories about why this perception may actually be partially true. Any thoughts on this subject? dedpir1967

Oh man, you want my thoughts on him....lol
Okay, he is a first class Prick and NO I don't agree with many of his comments directed at American rollers because he generalizes and groups everyone together which makes the better kits look bad. You couldn't give me his birds, I've seen nothing of them that makes me want to waste the feed on them. His greatest ability is to train a kit, and that information he isn't so quick to devulge. There are about three or four guys who I'm sure will post after this praising HB for being the next candidate to dust of old WHPs throne and you'll get to hear how wonderfully correct HB was. Hogwash.
You asked, you recieved.

Figure of 8 is not something you cant train yer birds to fly, I reckon this is the best flying pattern to win major competitions if you have birds with the motor breaking at both ends of the figure of 8 is great to watch and both frequent scoring ability from your kit of birds. My birds at the moment will not fly figure of 8 just figure 0 at the moment lol. But the best kits i have seen fly figure of 8 pattern.

Dedperl, I have spent quite a bit of time with Hiene , most havn't spent enough time with him to understand him, and then you take his limited English and he can come accross quite blunt to say the least LOL.
With that said, everything he does if for a puropse evolving around the team, from perch position to the size of wire on his floor.
He wants a bird with the "whole" package, and he most definatly can pick the smallest of faults within the roll.
But that bird must also be a 100 0/0 team player or it's nothing.
As for the figure 8 , that is a figure of speech of sorts and the closer you can get to it consistanlty is ideal. What you are looking for is the kit working a pattern where they change from flying on one wing to another , this sparks the team , the more consistant that pattern is the better it is for the kit to regroup after the break.
As for his comments regarding the US , thats a general statement as kits and flyers vary greatly in the US largly due to it's vastness , for the number of flyers that we are fielding in the finals though we are doing poorly regardless of where the judge is from.

I have spent enough time with Heine to gain a great respect for him , the depth of which he takes these birds is beyond most , and it shows , as he is undoubtably one of the best in the world.

That's interesting about the perceptions about Heine. I've never met him, so I can't comment. For those who know him and his birds, I'm curious to know if there are general differences in his birds than others. I agree that you can't teach the fly pattern. In the kits I've seen in my area(Maryland), i've never seen the fly pattern.
I see birds that are frequent with speed, but are slightly lacking in kitting. just a general observation. dedpir

dedpir,
Welcome to this site, you will find many varied opinions on
any subject but most all will be informative. I'm returning to the hobby after a long absence and would be glad to have a performing kit in the air, figure eight, circle or square!
I do however remember fly comps. in my local area and the best of the best seemed to fly the figure eight patteren. As a youngster I never had the ability or quality to train a kit to perform in this fasion, but I have high hopes!
Again, WELCOME!

Ded,
It`s not so much his birds as his training methods. As Scott alluded to everything he does has a purpose. If you look at his kitboxes they are really shallow built but wide enough for all the birds to be on on wall so they dont have as much room to fly in the box. The door is wide so most of them go out at the same time. The floors are big wire so the birds don`t land on the floor and socailize. He has v perches so there is no chance ever of his birds mating and a hen throwing an egg in flight. The birds rest while in the box. Period.

He feeds one seed at a time on the floor so he can watch what each bird eats and observe their behavior. When he selects birds for his A team he only selects the birds that are as close to 100 percent as he can get. Nothing else. Period. HE is very srtict on his birds.Thats why he is a two time world cup champion. He does what the rest of us talk about doing but only a few really have the "guts" to do.
Anytime I asked him about anything that wasn`t up to standard he said "I wouldn`t use that bird,or a bird that does that." "Only use the birds that are good birds." I knew then that I had to be honest with myself, not play favorites and be a ruthless ass when it comes time. It`s a hard thing to do but your program will be better for it.
