How high should a roller fly? How can you get your birds to fly higher?

Belle. I like mine to fly in the 400 to 600 foot range.Or at least to be able to make out the White Flights on a bird.I think around 800 feet is probably the max I ever want to see my birds. Not always this way but what I would like.LOL. Under normal weather conditions all I have to do to get mine to fly higher is feed them straight wheat for 3 or 4 days. David

Hey Belle, from a practical standpoint, I say your rollers need to just fly low enough so you can analyze their performance and quality. When they are too high, anything looks good! LOL
I like my birds to fly at about 250 to 300 feet. I have had some that like to sky out but they don’t make it to my breeder loft so I think the flying altitude can be selected as a trait that can be bred into or out of them.
To get my birds to fly higher, I just release the falcons… ---------- FLY ON! Tony Chavarria

Belle.
Like these guys said, you should have them close enough so you can see how good they are rolling. 300 ft is a good height, for a period of 25 to 45 minutes. Good luck.

Justin , Try hitting them with Millet to get them to lift, some also use Barley. It's a pain when they won't lift and birds wanna roll , gotta get them up.

Okay....millet and barley for higher flying....what about keeping them down!! I pull the water, cut back on the feed, rest and feed them up.....they still go up to high! I feel it's family and wheather induced...any other "tips" on keeping them lower....thanks!

Hey Pali, could flying conditions play a part? High/low borameter readings? High clouds? Winds?
Could it be a trait showing up in that group of birds? Is it a couple of high-flyers that are pulling the kit up? If so, pull them out and see what happens.
Did they develop this habit due to alot of predators hanging around? ---------- FLY ON! Tony Chavarria

Pali view, My first family of rollers were high flyers nothing would keep them down. Its just the way they were. I tried it all with the feed. I'm working with 2 other familys and they don't have high flying problem. My newer family's I have never messed with there feed yet. They are all under 8 months old ---------- Tapp

Pali , this is something that I fight once my birds mature , plus I get a lot of lift here Sping and Summer. A couple things can be going on, one they are just in to good of fly condition , or to fit , tis comes from to much flying coupled with to rich of feed. What I do is lock them up and pound the wt. on them with rich feed , I want them "out" of fly condition and fat. Then I start over , they will respond to the feed can much better also due to getting used to more feed , there is a reason that fat men don't run marithons !!!

Trev , I don't need to use it as flying low is just a phase that my Y/Bs go through , and if I see it going on for to long I will fly them with my oldbirds , once they hit a decent ht for a week it's like they like it. With the Barley , feed it straight until they start eating it as they will be reluctant , it, you want the rolled kind. Some guys use it to keep birds from getting to fat when locked down for whatever reason (not in extream cold ).
