Have any of you experianced problems related to head space affecting fertility. I built a 4 stall breeding pen for my mountian quail and am moveing them. The pens are 4 ft long 3 ft deep and 14 in tall. I wanted to use them for indvid. roller pens but I am not sure that it will give the cock enought room to mount the hen or that the birds will feel comfortable with the low ceiling. any thoughts c.j.

The 14" height should be fine as long as their is room for a second nest for the clutch of eggs that will come before the young are old enough to be on their own. My individsual pens are 18" high with a nest shelf, before the seconed clutch comes, I move the young down on the floor so the hen can use the nest again. With wire floors, a nest on the floor will receives vibs, whenever the birds jump down from the nest shelf. This vib. can damage eggs so they won't hatch.

Mine are 42x12x12. Nest bowl on each end. 14 eggs 14 chicks. I also have a 12x12 door/landing board on each box. Many a hen has been tread on there. I have seen them tread in the box as well. I lock them down til the first round of eggs come. If you have any doubts release them into the common area daily for an hour. ---------- V99 Good spinners don`t always make good breeders. http://www.bluedotloft.50megs.com
