Hows this for a story of a guy calling a spade a spade, A guy in the uk judged a kit of birds over here in a fly. When the judging was over & finished the guy asked the judge what he thought of his birds. The judge told the guy to cull everyone of the birds he had just watched and judged and put them in the refuse bin. I personally think the judge went about it the wrong way it could have been a little more diplomatic breaking the news easier. This the guy was a newbie to the sport but i do know the judge and he does calls a spade a spade and he wont alter what he said. He just didn't want the guy to waste and more time with his birds on knowing the background and the shitty performance he had just watched. This judge upset and angered a lot of people but i understand where both sides was coming from just an example of different opinions but at the end of the day they are just Birmingham Rollers we are talking about. Well that's the end of me baffling on.

Personally if the guy flew in comps and wanted to be successful then i would tell him his birds are rubbish if asked in a nice and friendly manner lol. In time the guy will thank you for saving him a lot of time and effort flying crap. A judge would have to see the guys kit a couple of times to call a kit rubbish but you usually can see potential on the first visit. If the guy was a back yard flyer then it don't matter if he enjoys his hobby leave him to it. just my opinion.

If he would ask me how I liked them I would just simply tell him that I didn't. But, I would make damn sure if he asked why I didn't I would be ready to tell him all of the negetive things I saw and not just put him off with an open end statement. I would get as specific as I could.

Never say things like "they are just junk".

Most everyone does think their birds are top notch , thats why judging isn't a fun job , it's no fun handing a guy a score sheet thats 5 points and a 1.0 1.0 for qaulity and depth.
Scotty , it is pretty easy to see if the birds have potential even on bad days, for that matter you can get a pretty good read just by looking in the kitbox to see if there is potential there.

If you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything at all. Many times, I recall a judge telling a flyer they "kitted well" Even if the birds didn't score they may have stuck together. You arn't going to succeed in rollers if you can't evaluate your own birds. To do that you need to see as many kits perform as possible. Don't ask for the judges opinion unless you are prepared to take a hit.

I think there is a nice way to put things. I wouldn't go out of my way to tell someone to scrap his kit and the birds behind them...but if asked, I might say, "couple good ones up there, but you may want to re-evaluate things and work on the quality a tad." Painful to hear the truth, especially when we think we have the best under the sun...lol I am always open to objective criticism when flying birds for people. That is how we improve...work on our weaknesses, not focusing on our strengths.

I'll put it this way: Remember the judge is in your back yard, he's your guest. He should.......... be professional at all times. Pull the flyer a side and be truthful, and with respect just tell the flyer what he can improve on with kitting "ect". That flyer will never forget the judge or those wise comments, the judge will allways come out for good or bad with RESPECT!

When I flew in my first fly my reasoning was to get an assessment of my operation.I wanted a truthful answer to my questions.

I think tactful answers are what most of us are looking for. I would like to know from a professional what I needed to do to improve my performance.

I agree with Scott, I would only say some thing if they asked and also with Wayne, if they are only backyard flyers why burst their bubble. They were right when they said the truth hurts, call it like you see it.

Hey Rust,
maybe it;s because some "the names you stated" speak the truth. Dont get me wrong, I dont believe in being dis-respectful, but at the same time, I do believe in the truth when asked for it..Jerry

maybe, just maybe they didnt see it as being rude, seeing how they are from across the pond and have different views and different ways of looking at things. I agree with you tho, and think that opinions should be kept silent from the judges unless the loft owner asks their opinion..Jerry

I think that you may be looking at thier advice the wrong way , you might want to think about who gave it to you and why.
With that said , if they are judging your birds it is thier obligation to tell you why they did what they did , as for myself I have told a judge more than once that my kit looked like dogshit .
I would rather beat them to the punch LOL , doesn't hurt my feelings either way, I watched the same kit and know what problems there were.
I have yet to have a good fly and not be rewarded for it by a judge .

Rust,
You just named two of the best breeders and flyers in the sport with disrespect! I can't see how you are any different than what you accuse them of. Some people want their feathers fluffed, even if they are flying junk.. If Don O, or Hiene told me their opinion of my birds honestly, I can't imagine anyone I would think more qualified to help a man asses the quality of the birds they are flying. If you don't want to know the truth, best to hide in the backyard and be a legend in your own mind. No chance of being told your birds need improvement. KGB

i'VE BEEN JUDGED BY BOTH AS WELL. bY hEINE IN PRIVATE IN MY BACKYARD - JUST ME AND HIM AND BY dON A COUPLE OF TIMES. tHE BEST JUDGES TELL YOU WHAT NEEDS TO IMPROVE WITH NO HOLDING BACK. IF YOU CAN TAKE IT AND APPLY IT, YOU CAN ADVANCE.

THE JUDGES THAT MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD ARE NO HELP

The only reason I fly in Competition is to get different Judges in my backyard.I want them to tell me exactly what they think.Good or Bad.I have been Blessed to have 5 Top Judges stand under my birds. All have helped me to better my birds. All have went into detail about what they looked for in a Good roller.I need their criticism and praise to keep me moving forward.David

Rust,
When you pay to enter a fly and ask a man to judge your birds, isn't that equal to asking him to asses your birds based on his opinion of what he just seen you fly under his judgement? What does the word judge mean to you? If you ask a man to judge your team, you have asked for his opinion and assesment of your kit.. You guys might want to keep that in mind.. KGB

Hey! kenny, yes and no, but your right, i'm only saying that the judge opinion should be a little tone down that all if i was so lucky to be pick as a judge that's how i would act, not drop the F-BOMBS OR THE-S BOMBS. Because i consider my self 1st. class person with a sense humor.

David,
You took the words right out of my mouth,LOL.I might add that these different judges, judge differently. So it's interesting to see the different stlyes. Some just a hair looser, but not by very much at all.I've seen the same kit of birds get judged exactly the same by some of these guys that were mentioned. But I also say that so far the judging here has been top notch, peronalitys aside. You just have to take it in stride, although I agree sometimes its hard....Aloha,Todd
