To achieve color the scent of the rose has been bred out. They are now crossing petunias into the rose to get the scent of the rose back. It will take awhile(years) to get it back

Weird ain't it?

Weird how the roses still smell as beautiful even with the pretty colors.

Keep it simple and to the point. If it doesnt involve you, keep quiet.

Nick,
I used to dabble with roses a while back. What roses are you talking about?
I've still got Rugosa's, Grandiflora's, Floribunda's, Tea, and Old English roses.

Russ,

I was watching SUNDAY MORNING on CBS and they had a part of the program done on the florist rose market. They have cross bred other species for color and as a result they have lost the original rose scent from the roses. This floriest company has started a process to get what was originally the rose scent back into the rose. They are expecting it to take approximatly 4 years to get it back. Many of the new hybred colors will have to be dropped to get the scent back.

I just thought it was irronic(sp?) how the breeding for color my cause the elimination of some other desirable properties in the rose.

But not the original scent of the rose. They probably smelled just like a tulip...........But I am glad they smelled and looked beautiful.
