It just broke my heart, having to get rid of 2 dead young birds that were just born a couple days before. I figure they froze to death in the nest?? The Birds had a nice nest of tobacco stalks in a paper bowl to help keep them warm. But they left it, just letting the young die. This is the second time this pair have killed their young chicks after hatching. What do I do now, give them another chance??

Jim if they were feeding the young i would give them another shot when it warms up.Sometimes it's just to cold for squabs to survive when the parents no longer want to sit on them all day!It happened to me a few months ago with a cold front we got here in the San Gabriel Valley.Good luck!

Jim, Give them another chance but try locking them in the breeder box for the first 10 days after hatching the eggs.Give the young a chance to fatten a bit and if the adults are locked in the box they may sit the young better. --- Kelly

yes Jim it sucks , you take cold weather and inexperianced parents though and it gets tough. I started a month early this year and just as the last time I did it I had problems. once you get into March ,April,May things get a lot easier.

Hey Classic, Sorry for that loss. I use heaters installed on the walls. Works great, 70-80 degrees in the loft when its 20 degrees outside. ---------- FLY ON! Tony Chavarria

Hey Jerry, Lex asked me to ask you if you would at least stop by for a while before going to the loft. LOL
Ken, yes it gets pretty cold for this California born and raised boy: lowest so far has been 4 degrees F. does not include the wind chill.
Check out these pictures of my kit box. Doors were totally sealed with ice and birds were in it. I had to get the hammer and bust them out! I have pictures somewhere of them being totally seled but I can't locate them on my hard drive...

Heating Breeding Lofts:
What type of devices do you use to heat your breeding lofts? Does anyone use oil heaters? I have heard they are energy efficient. What device would be the least fire hazard?

classicJim, Keep an eye on those tobacco stems. I don't like 'em. Soemtimes they can be too coarse and cause broken eggs and squashed youngsters, too. Pine needles or carpet padding or shavings work much better in my opinon. YITS, Cliff

Jim Right now I am keeping in the house and hand feeding two young one's that I brought back to life with a blow dryer , both of these out of different nests. Saved another yesterday morning, so always get some heat to them before declaring them dead, they will hit a state where all indications are that they are dead, start warming them up,and many times they start coming out of it. It is just plain hard to breed this time of year.

Scott, I would never have figure you for a soft heart, like that! LOL! My guess would have been that you would have let them croak if they couldn't hack it! You ol' softie...I guess there's hope for you after all, buddy! LOL! YITS, Cliff
PS. If I was breeding out of the same birds as you, I'd be out there rescuing little pigeon-sickles, too!

Hi Jim, When this occurs it pays to have a 25 watt light bulb burning all night in the loft it is usually a case of the hen getting her last minute fill of grub because of the cold nights to blanket her down and not being able to find her way back to the nest. I have learned this a long time ago when a very estute fancier by the name of Bill Schrieber got me privy of why I was loosing some youngsters from parents abanding the nest and young freezing. Its really very inexpensive to leave a 25 watt light bulb burning than it is to stomach the loss of two potential babies. Ivan
