Ben, you want to have as much control as possible over your birds. This is established with the feed can and signals that you give to them. When you start out a young group of birds, you want to cut their feed slowly every day until they are eating what you give them and there is nothing left. This establishes the feeding pattern and you want to whistle or some other signal when feeding. When you release them, they should either loaf around a bit on the roof if they are really young, or start to take short flights around the yard. When they return, or the majority have returned (some or a few will still be somewhere trying to figure things out) you place their now known feed tray into the box and toss a little feed into it, with them watching, and using the signal of your choice. Most of us whistle. They might be reluctant the first day, but as every day passes they will quickly get the idea,...see daddy put tray into house, oh there is the feed and for some reason I can't help but be drawn to it (whistle). In a week you should have them going in on command, provided you have their feed rations right. Too much feed, too much loafing and not paying attention to you. Young birds always seem to be hungry so there is some latitude with the amount. You will know when you fed them too much because they won't go in. It is very important to establish this routine in the first few weeks of flying. It will make your management of them much easier as they grow up.

If they are young birds, don't worry about what the feed does to them right now. You'll have to learn about the different ways that different grains effect your birds when they get older. This is again assuming they are young birds you just got up and flying. If they are older, you want to base your feed around wheat and work from there.
For the young birds I move them into the kit box when they still can't fly. They get as much of the breeder mix as they want to eat. It is in front of them all of the time. In a week I start to cut the mix with wheat/peas/milo. Then the next week it is wheat/peas/milo with a little more wheat than the other two grains. Feed them enough so they fill up and then remove the extra. Slowly lessen the amount you feed them until they are really paying attention to you when you come out in the morning. At this point you have them about right and can get them to react to your whistling or signal of choice. They are fast learners, but you have to take the time to do these types of things. They won't learn it or figure it out automatically. When they are flying you should feed them a decent amount. You will know when you have fed too much when the next time you let them out, some don't trap in when called to.
If they are young, keep doing these same things every day. Every day is a new day and if you are doing your part, they will respond to you. Bottom line is that you have to learn by observing them, what is too much feed and what is just right.
