Okay, not mass carnage unless you are a bag of thistle seeds. This one is for you Nickolas, taken in my own backyard from about five feet away from them. California Goldfinches.

Brian. What are you feedin them in? Never seen that before. All I use is one of those tube feeders but they seem to waste a lot of the thistle seed out of it.David

David, I believe it is called either a Thistle Sock or a Goldfinch Sock, I can't remember at the moment. I get them here at Walmart where they sell the bird seed. They spill quite a bit of Thistle with this too, but most of it appears to be the thistle hulls on the ground. The house finches usually hang out on the ground underneath it to pick up the scraps.

Hey BMC, I had so many of those finches at one time and was hanging two of those sock feeders off my gazebo and went through about 10lbs of feed a week and yes your right they do waste alot of feed because I recycled the stuff on the ground and they ate that too LOL. The males are really brilliant in color and I suppose if I didn't take the sock down or not refill it they woud have wintered here because they left in early november when I din't replenish the feeder. Nice picture. Ivan

Hey Ivan. I can't recall having many of them until this year. We've had an abnormally dry and fairly mild winter. This was the first year I hung the socks and it seems the numbers grow daily as long as I keep it filled. I agree, man they can sure go through some grub for little birds...lol. At one point in the morning my son and I counted over 20 of them trying to feast on the contents. I've been to Jerrys countless times and it seems he always has them pretty much year 'round.

We have them here all year too.As long as we keep the feed out they seem to hang around. I don't think the males take on the brilliant color untill breeding season.I could be wrong but from watching them I think they change color as the weather warms.David

Beautiful shots Brian.I love to watch the birds at the feeders out my kitchen window. It was a rarely seen around here black feral pigeon landing on our feeder just over a year ago that triggered my desire to have pigeons again. That's what I call freedom, being a bird. ---------- Kelly
