We got a little over a foot of snow out of the storm, but I only had about 3 inches on the ground previous, so it wasn't too bad. We are use to dealing with this stuff out here, this has been an easy winter so far, except for the last 2 to 3 weeks of frigid temps, we have had a warm, low snow winter. Next week it is suppose to be in the high 30's and 40's, so this stuff will melt fast, and then it will be March which means winter is almost over. I'll be flying birds again about 5 weeks.

Dave.Do you lockdown when the Winter gets bad? How long does it take to get the birds back in shape. This is the first I have had to lockdown this long.My birds are so fat they probably won't fly when I do start. David

David,
I lock down every year from the end of October until about mid-March. Within about 3-4 weeks of flying again in the spring, the birds are birds are back in shape again and hitting on all cylinders. When you first put them out again, they only fly about 5 minutes or so and the deeper ones bump the ground, but every time out they fly longer, and they get their strength back, lose the fat, and get back into form.

Hey David,
You said it yourself,"mostly high flying or homer type flying". Why take a chance losing good birds to the hawks all winter, to just fly them once in awhile and get that type of performance? No thanks. If you lock down, you save all your good birds, and they get right back into shape in no time. Plus who the hell wants to stand out there freezing their ass watching them? LOL.

Hey Ron,
I live in the Finger Lakes region of NY state, just outside of Rochester. I start cutting their feed back about a week before their first fly, this helps to burn off some of the excess fat. I just feed them their regular mix that I fly them on all fly season.

Dave.Thats the conclusion I came to.LOL. I had to start feeding heavier for the cold and was hoping it didn't last this long but it has.I sure can't take the cold anymore thats for sure. I will see how it works out this Spring.Maybe next year I won't hold as many over the Winter. David
